General logic I’ve come across is equal to net worth plus next 5-10 years of income potential. Plus, add $1M of UM/UIM protection.

This check out with the board?

I feel like you're gonna get sued for whatever the amount is.

Depends on your current state of life. Own your home? Family with children? Any of those children of driving age or close to it? Value of total assets?

Lawyers typically go for the "low hanging fruit" so whatever limits you do carry, you can bet they will be targeted at the full amounts.

If your answer to the questions above are yes and you have a good amount of assets, I'd recommend no less than $1M in umbrella. If you have teenage drivers, may bump that up a bit. Typically each layer of million dollar coverage is "less expensive" than the layer before so pricing higher limits shouldn't be a huge concern.

The world is getting more litigious and more expensive. I'd rather have too much liability protection than not.

It’s relatively cheap.

So I would just evaluate how much net worth you want to protect.

My insurance provider max out at 5M

That seems like a lot. I feel like $2M is plenty for most professionals. Why are you evaluating your exposure based on your assets and income? Those don’t make you any more likely to be subject to a big claim.

It’s possible that people might be inclined to pursue an excess judgment because they perceive you to be wealthy, but I think that’s being a little paranoid.

I would also look at the premiums. I certainly wouldn’t pay a whole lot for a high limit.

I personally look at it as how much protection do I want if I suffer injury (UM) vs. how much protection do I want if sued. Most attorneys settle for limits and if I injure someone, I'm going to tell my insurance company to give them every penny they ask for so they don't seek an excess. That way if my insurance company decides not to, they are on the hook for the excess, not me.

THIS

Got in a car wreck, no bodily damage, no injuries, nothing but somehow they magically came up with this number of suing for one million. Which is the exact amount our umbrella coverage is…

Are your totals publicly posted for an attorney to see?

so no injuries and they sued for $1m? Ok

Are you sure they didn’t ask for your “policy limits” not knowing what they were? That’s pretty standard for bad injuries.

They didn’t have access to the number but attorney said they most likely called around faking names and somehow found the policy amount.

Have read that wage garnishment for high income is a next tranche that can be pursued.

$5M umbrella with $1M UM/UIM for $1400 a year.

About $1000 annually for the $5M and $380 annually for the $1M UM/UIM

I’m looking at the RLI application now. Am I interpreting it correctly that they demand I have a certain level of auto insurance coverage already in place before they’ll provide a policy ?

Is this with a teenage driver? I wish mine was this cheap.

Yes. This is customary.

It’s asking that I carry $500k Bodily Injury per person. I’m currently at $250k/person, and Progressive doesn’t do any higher.

What am I supposed to do about that?

Here is what RLI says:

Tell Us About Your Auto Insurance Limits.
Which of the following minimum required limits of automobile liability do all drivers agree to maintain as a condition of coverage for all automobiles that are owned (titled or registered to), leased, rented, operated or acquired during the policy period by you or any member of your household?

Limit A
$500,000 Bodily Injury (per person)
$500,000 Bodily Injury (per occurrence)
$50,000 Property Damage (per occurrence)
OR
$500,000 Combined Single Limit (per occurrence)
