I'll try to not get too long winded. Currently I'm not happy with my current pay and career (35k). I currently hold a bachelors in industrial technology c/o 16'. I would like to Possibly get into o&g or construction management. Also I have a family of 4 so I can't really relocate. I have applications out but no luck since graduating a year ago. Any tips?

Move.

Are you applying for jobs in larger cities?

Need more information. Where are you located? You apply for jobs not industries. What are your skills?

Currently reside in Lafayette. My skill set is what I've learned in school such as cad programs, electronic circuits, basic hydraulics, construction courses, and CNC. I've worked in manufacturing doing some machining, fabrication, and welding.

You're in a fairly small and concentrated job market.

Giving a hard no to moving is going to severely limit your opportunities.

I'm assuming you went back to school later in life. What did you do pre college?

I worked as a helper for a electrical construction company before I went back to school. I realize me not wanting to move is a damper on career choices, but I really don't want a house note with my student loans. I'm sure anybody can understand that.

Sell the house, move and buy a new one. It's worth something, right?

We do.

But do you understand that you can't have your cake and eat it too? If you want to be a hardass about not moving for the family's sake, you may have to open your horizons in how far you are willing to commute daily. One way or another something has gotta give.

ETA: Also, you probably aren't helping yourself with sending out applications with right around a year (or less) at your first job from college.

Become a teacher. You'd actually make more money. 4 kids is a lot right out of school, man. God bless

You're severely limiting your career options if you aren't willing to move.

What is your current job?

I'm willing to commute within a ~45 minute drive. I'm a rodman on a survey crew for state government.

I would look for jobs in Lake Charles. Go in person to the plants but also the construction companies that work in the plants. Turner Industries, Cajun which I think is out of Baton Rouge. There's another major company that escapes me. It would be a commute but those companies are also paying housing per diems in many cases. They are hiring so many people right now. It might be the best way to get some experience.

Maybe try Lemoine Construction in Lafayette?

Farther than 45min, but BR will probably have more opportunities than laffy. But really tho, frick that commute

I'm a CM major, I moved to D.C.. Relocating helps. School districts outside of LA almost always shite on LA. Staying in laffy over a school district is not a great reason.

So become a professional surveyor. You may already have the qualifying courses....or you may need just a few more to sit for the exam. This opens up your career options in your imemdiate area, gives you a credential that may allow you to be promoted in your existing state job niche, and gives you a solid credential that you can parlay into your own surveying business.

Go work for a home builder for a few years.. get your contractor license and go out on your own?

Talk with local GC's about coming on as an estimator and work your way up from there.

Two friends of mine went this route and both are happy and seem to be secure with their jobs. I would add maybe looking into facility management as an option. You are going to see more and more places requiring licenses facility managers in the future. IFMA is a good place to start.

I've actually looked into this. According to LAPELS. I need 21 additional hours in surveying courses but I won't be able to get a registered license because none of higher ups in my dept. has a RPLS, so I'd be stuck at intern level.

My wife stays at home to care for my disabled child.

I turned in some apps to lemoine and local GC's no word back though ¯\_(?)_/¯

Sorry if it seems as though I'm shutting down every idea. Thanks for yalls input.

If you just sent an unsolicited resume it probably didn't do anything. Show up, look good, research the company, explain why you want to work for them, and why they should want you to work for them.
