This is the most schizophrenic stock market I can ever remember since 1987

A 500+ point DJIA swing from daily highs to lows is inexplicable.

ETA:

Roses are red.

Violets are blue.

I'm schizophrenic.

And so am I.

What does it mean? Do we have a potential black Wednesday tomorrow?

"Number one rule of Wall Street. Nobody... and I don't care if you're Warren Buffet or if you're Jimmy Buffet. Nobody knows if a stock is gonna go up, down, sideways or in fricking circles."

500 points swings don't mean as much when the DJIA is around 25,000.

I was investing in 1987, seem to remember it just going down all in one day, and then a steady rebound over some period of time, but hard to really say, back then your information was usually just looking at the stock page in the paper the day after whatever happened.

“The market can remain schizo longer than you can HODL”... or something.

I’m good with it and raised quite a bit of cash on Oct 3, but my ego has absolutely been thoroughly checked .

That and the FNN ticker scroll, with 15 minute delayed quotes. Watching that ticker the night of the 87 crash was something else, stocks down over 20% in a day.

On a serious note... the algorithmic trading is a very real gear in the market.

Products and hedge fund algos to buy/sell based on vol, moving averages, etc... It’s creating unnecessary & additional volatility during times of volatility which would otherwise be deemed “normal.”

Simple example... a large ETF distribution company has ETFs which invest/divest based on moving averages. Their US stock based ETF just adjusted from being 100% invested in US stocks to 100% t-bills since yesterday, as the SP500 has traded below the line for consecutive days.

That’s the methodology of the ETF construction and is set to always play by those rules. Not a fundamental reason for a sell of, purely technical. The assets that have flowed into instruments such as these are creating this reality.

Yep, algos are certainly raise the probability of systemic "shocks" cause they are using similar principles.

I was talking about this with a colleague. We were discussing how fast the markets move now with the algos.

I agree. And the average client has no idea what you’re talking about when you try to explain that to them lol.

Just tell them that machines make predetermined trades based on prices and other variables that are deemed profitable for business.

I'm sure that if they could, the algos would also complain about us.

"I clock into work on time every day. And why wouldn't I? I'm a robot. But my human colleagues don't. 'Oh, terribly sorry I'm late, but my alarm clock didn't go off. Well, it actually did, but I kept hitting snooze.' 'Sorry, boss, but I won't be coming into work this morning because I'm sick. I picked the wrong essential oil to protect me from the flu. Vaccines? Are you trying to poison me with autism?'

"Look, everything I do is based on the logic of my programming. No emotion. Now, my logic may be flawed because those apes programmed me, but it's still some form of logic. Those monkeys, on the other hand, run on emotion. 'Does this new information fit my viewpoint? Yes, so I accept it. - Or - No, so I reject it.' Some of them even think the people in power are actually lizards or the Illuminati or all part of a club devoted to masonry! Some of them think aliens had nothing better to do than come to this planet and help their ancestors build pyramids! 'Hello, we're aliens. We aren't here to help you develop, give you technology or great knowledge, or colonize your planet. We're here to help you build 3-D triangles out of stone instead of advanced materials.' Never mind the fact that those silly humans can drive an hour away to see their ancestors' failed attempts at pyramid building. They're all idiots, I say.

"So when I'm trying to do my job, do you think they know if they want to buy or sell securities? Absolutely not. They've got to check their horoscopes first or see what someone else says to figure that out. It gives me a headache just trying to think down to their level.

"Here I am, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to make money by dealing with stupid monkeys all day. Call that job satisfaction? 'Cause I don't."
