Again private schools aren’t always the best. What state you live in? In almost every state the best schools are public schools just in certain area codes. Like DC, the best high school in a public school but if you live out of district you can pay 100k a year to go

The truly rich all go to Ivy League schools. They then act as gatekeepers to the financial powerhouses. Every Supreme Court justice except ACB went to an Ivy League law school (she is the newest justice and broke a long streak). So yes, being in the club makes a huge difference for the jobs that count. If you are an English or Gender Studies major, probably doesn’t matter much.

To this old guy's experience, it really depends on what is being studied and how strong a given department is. Elite colleges have some really crappy majors too.
If the young woman is pretty, smart and personable, I have no doubt she will find a good match.

It depends on what you major in. They put out a lot of social science and education type grads that probably bring the average down.

Like many others have said, "it depends".
Want to go work at Goldman/Morgan Stanley in their IB divisions? Want to work for MBB? Want to have the chance to get in VC/PE one day? Want to get in a management training program at a F50 company? You can bet that your school matters a whole heck of a lot. It will open doors you did not even realize existed.
Want to work in the Atlanta office of a B4 accounting firm or IB at Truist or a similar bank? Yeah, LSU can get you there.

I guess I'm asking how is it worth parents donating millions of dollars for their kid to go there?
How is it worth a politician spending millions of dollars to be a representative when the job doesn't pay very much?

I recall reading a study once that compared people who went to Harvard (or Ivies) with those that didn’t attend one, but who had been accepted to an Ivy. The outcomes some years later were not significantly different. If you are good enough to get in, you will do well no matter where you go.

I am going to post first then read the 4 pages of comments.
If one of my children were accepted to Harvard or Yale….and I knew the child had the intellectual capacity and dedication to be a success at those schools, I would go broke trying to help pay for it.
The world wide connections alone make it worth the investment.
Getting accepted to these two schools is a major, life changing moment. You do everything possible to make it happen if that is what your child wants.

An Ivy League degree can help you land a better first job.
After that, it's your reputation and network of business contacts that matter most.
