But, I'm curious, are you saying I'm paying him too much or too little?

I'm just kidding. I have no idea how big your yard is or how complicated your landscaping is.

I used to work a landscaping gig in high school and I got paid pennies compared to that

It takes my guy about an hour and 15 minutes each time he comes for a "regular" grass cutting, leaf mulching and edging.

I pay him $65 for that. Totally worth it.

How can they get a payday loan when they don't know when payday will be?

I'll leave the politics to the Poli Board, but the financial implications of this to these employees is starting to get out of control.

Friend of mine is one of the "lucky" employees who still has to work but isn't getting paid. He's overdrawn on checking. The bank calls him 3-4 times a day to remind him to make a payment. He just took a $2,000 distribution from an old IRA he had, and cashed the check, because he doesn't want to put the check in the bank.

He's basically not paying any bills and using cash to pay for gas, groceries, etc. His credit card is just about maxed out.

And in the end, they are going to get all the money back they are owed from payroll. But, what about the tax and penalty he now owes on the IRA withdrawal? Even if he puts the money back into the account, he still owes it.

Emergency funds are important. We are learning so many don't have one.

Heres a stupid question. Why isnt your friend paying his bills? Thats what i want to know..

One local credit union is offering 90-day interest free advances for federal employees.

Look it's obvious he was not prepared. No savings outside retirement and credit card almost maxed out.

He's also paying 16k a year for his daughter to attend a private college.

I understand if people don't have sympathy. I was just showing that there are real people being impacted,

I hope he reevaluates some choices and is better prepared for the future.

Why not just go to one of the many reputable banks that are currently offering loans for federal employees on furlough?

This is the correct answer. There are quite a few banks and credit unions perfectly willing to do this for reasonable interest rates.

And most skilled workers can easily find a second job and be paid extra during this time.

While DoD is not currently shutdown, the crazy part is that they are not allowed to seek outside employment without approval from the government. Especially anything using their engineering expertise.

This guy is old enough to have kids in college and can’t go 3 weeks without a paycheck?

I was picturing a 24 year old a year or two out of college.

Your friend deserves to pay 40% interest at a pay day loan store

LMAO at this I can get a part time job crap. Hiring process usually takes at least a week and you wont see that money for another 2 weeks and very few places will hire you knowing that you will quit at any moments.

Even Postmates takes about a week or so and requires at least a few days worth of gas

As a fed employee currently on furlough I can just say it sucks. Luckily I'm in a position where I can pay my bills for a few months with out a check, but I have a number of guys I work with that for various reasons can not. These are good hard working people and through no fault of their own are really in a bind. These guys live paycheck to paycheck and don't live beyond their means. In a perfect world they would have some emergency funds but some just do not.

With that said its not that easy to just go get a job. Many people that pay well will not touch you cause they know in a week or 2 you will go back to the government job. Its winter so the lawn and pressure wash crews really aren't busy and looking for help. And like someone else said it takes time to get on and then more time to get paid. A few guys are delivering pizza or doing uber to make a few bucks. I haven't started looking myself but have began thinking what I would do if this lasts a few more weeks. Im use to working, being home and doing honey do's is getting old. and its not like I can go spend a ton on money on fishing trips or other outings.

Knowing we will get back pay takes off some of the pressure but dealing with the now is tough. But their are way better options then payday loans.

The people who are really screwed are all of the contractors that won’t get back pay.

Yeah I really feel for those guys. Their money is lost. We don't have any contractors at our office, but I know many offices do.

Sounds like his daughter should be at a public college. Or maybe she should postpone her education. I don't care if he's divorced. The judge can't force him to pay for something he can't afford and based on your representation of his finances he be poor.

It's worth highlighting the caveats here.

Someone who is within a year or two of starting his career can't be blamed for not saving up enough.

Today I'm just over 50 and have had plenty of time to get my gear situated properly. But I remember when I was 25 and didn't have that going for me.

How did this happen? I can’t imagine maxing out any of my cards in what, a month? I mean, the interest would suck if this goes on for more than 30-60 days, but you have to figure it gets worked out within the next month. Hell, apply for a zero interest intro offer card and keep yourself up with that until payday gets here. Key is to simply spend at or, preferably, below normal levels. Don’t overdo it and it should be much better than paying penalties on early IRA withdrawal.

Problem here is it sounds like he was already making poor spending decisions before shite hit the fan. And now I’m reading he’s paying for a private college. Geez. Needs to reevaluate.

You pay less than me (over an acre) but I’m in NOVA so it’s not surprising.

Raise hand. Well, sort of. We’re waiting on several contracts to be signed off on that won’t happen until the end of the shutdown.

If he can put the $ back in his IRA within 60 days, he won’t have to pay taxes on it.
