We aren't seeing a way on the site to gift each other another 10k though?

On your account, you need to add a new registration for your wife and check the "This is a gift" box. Your wife would do the same and add you as a new gift registration.

Then go and purchase another I bond using the gift registration.

How long do you hold the I bonds? 6 months @7.12 and 6 months@9.62?

Yes, 1 year minimum. You'll pay 3 months of interest if you cash out after anything less than 5 years though. I plan on holding there 5 years.

Treasury site says max $10,000 regardless of whether you buy or receive as gift.

How much in I bonds can I buy as gifts?

The purchase amount of a gift bond counts toward the annual limit of the recipient, not the giver. So, in a calendar year, you can buy up to $10,000 in electronic bonds

It says this:
"Bonds you buy for yourself and bonds you receive as gifts or via transfers count toward the limit"

The key is to not deliver the gift and let it sit in your Treasury Direct giftbox till the next calendar year. Buying a gift does not count toward a limit; it's when you deliver a gift then it counts toward the recipient's yearly limit.

My mom and I bought each other $10k gifts last summer including buying $10k for ourselves. We delivered the the gifts to each other in Jan of this year. Then we bought another $10k gift for each other and will deliver that in Jan 2023. I've read over on Bogleheads where people have bought 50k+ of gifts this year for their spouse. This is not breaking the rules, it will just takes several years to deliver all of the gifts.

So as these bonds sit in your gift box and accrue interest while you are waiting to gift them, what happens to the interest, does it re invest into the bond?

Okay gotcha. The purpose in that is not to actually increase the total amt of bonds but a) lock in the May rate for 6 months and b) to get the year hold clock ticking (I assume that clock begins upon purchase and not delivery).

Makes sense. But if people want to add more $ then the trust thing is super easy. It's just a contract and is fully revocable. Each spouse can have one, so that's another $20k per couple.

Are you limited to purchase the 10k individually per 12 month cycle? (just focusing on this for my question, knowing I have other options to increase purchases)

So purchasing 5k now and 5k on the May rate(?) gets you the composite 12 month return?

The 10k limit is per calendar year. You could buy 10k in December then buy another 10k in January.

If you bought 5k now and another 5k in May; the returns would be different:

-The first one would earn 7.12% for 6 months, then 9.62% for 6 months
-The second one would earn 9.62% for 6 months, then 6 months at the rate that will be set Nov 1

What a pain
Started filling out info last night only to have website go unavailable halfway through… did it agai same problem… did it this morning and as a submitted password the site went unavailable… tried again and was locked out… a few hours later got an email of my account number.. went in and did a test purchase of 25 dollars and will see if goes through ok.. then set up two more ( wife and llc) and everything was tedious but went fine.. if all test purchases go fine tomorrow I will max out all three accounts…
Trying to get in before end of month to set next six months at 7.6 and the trigger the new six month clock at 9.2 … taking bird in hand in case it drops below 7.6 next time…also you get entire months of interest even if you buy last day of month.. so can sell next April 1 …I think

Btw.. it told me to call help desk when it locked me out.. I did … it said 4.5 hour wait time and did not give me option to just have them call me when my time came up… I hung up.

What do you mean by “open an account”? I seem to recall having to print and complete documents needing special certification from my banking institution. Started process April 6 and received notice yesterday from Treasury Direct that they are in receipt of my paperwork. May be a while.

Thanks for the info, I just opened an account and added 10k to lock in current rates plus the new rates in May. I'll get the wife to do the same locking in 40k at pretty good rates that was just sitting in a savings account earning nothing is pretty good.

I’m having the same issue as you. However when we opened an account for my wife, we had no issue at all and were able to put in funds immediately. Would it make sense to do a 10k gift in my wife’s account and transfer that to mine whenever they actually open it up?

I set up an account for myself, my husband, and both of my parents, and I didn't have to do any of that. I just added the bank account routing numbers and account numbers.

The site does suck but I was able to do all four without any real issues.
