It would take a lot for me to put up with the manipulative head games.

So much that I’d likely not consider any counter at that point

This whole process is now very uncomfortable for me.

Why? Seems like a pretty easy decision to me.

-F500 company is giving you a nice raise insurance and 401k benefits, plus another possible raise in 3 months
-Current company is either BS’ing you or not in a great financial spot...either way is bad.

Now he's scheming for a way to make that work or something competitive, offering to pay my salary out of his if the company can't afford it and guaranteeing me a percentage of sales from our new product launch... I don't think he could get the board to ever agree to these things, I don't know why he's suggesting them

If you're not going to stay there even if he gets this, you need to go back, graciously thank him for trying and respectfully tell him you're taking the new job and you appreciate your time at their company.

If he comes back with everything you offered and you say no its going to burn the frick out of that bridge.

I requested to talk to him but he's in meetings until later.

I'm going to explain that I'm sorry for not taking his initial counter and thinking on it longer before saying no. I'm also sorry for giving him the number that I did. I felt pressured in the moment to provide a number, I pulled one out of thin air and it was wrong of me to do that. My inexperience in handling these situations showing.

With all that said, I just want to try my hand at working for the large company. I've been successful everywhere I've ever been and I just need to 'scratch the itch' of working with the big company.

Please don't spend any more time or energy trying to come up with a counter.

Are you going to say that to him?

Yes, I plan to say that or something like it.

If you have an argument for why that isn't wise, I'm all for more advice. Would hate to screw this up further.

To be honest, I have always been taught and lived by the advice that brevity is important. And it's served me well.

I would not apologize and I would not say almost anything that you posted.

I would just walk in and say:

Boss, I thought it over last night and I am going to take the new job. I wanted to thank you very much for my time here at the company and for the counter offer. I wish you all the best and I hope we can remain friendly after I leave.

Be professional and be brief and do not expound on anything or give any specifics.

And I'd just leave it at that.

No matter what his reaction is or how mad he gets or what counters he gives or anything, I'd constantly take the short high road and I'd just repeat some form of those sentences.

Thanking him for your time at the company, appreciating the counter offer, but the new job is the best option for you.

I wouldn't apologize, I definitely wouldn't mention how great you think you are or needing to scratch an itch, I wouldn't be specific at all about the counter or your counter.

Just say you appreciate him trying, but this is what's best for you. And move on.

Thanks for the feedback.

I also try to practice "Brevity is Wit" and will consider what you've said before I talk to him.

You're welcome. I've had two bosses come to me with counters and try to keep me at their companies. Both times I left respectfully and I don't regret it for a second.

But by all means, get someone else's advice too and weigh what you think is best.

They’re just buying time to find your replacement.

The bad PR is a red flag. Why give a raise to a poor performer?

Do you think they’ll bat an eye at letting you go with a days notice? They’re promising you everything because they know they won’t have to pay it for too long.

I agree with you.

I will try to put an end to any more counters today.

He explained the company didn't make any money and he just couldn't give me anything else at that time. This is still the case and he'd be taking out a "loan" in the form of more money from our CEO/Owner.

How long can a business operate with a business model like that?

Update-

I did apologize for not considering his counter more carefully and for pulling a number out of my butt.

I told him that I talked with my family and S/O and had made the decision to go with the F500.

He did not seem upset and I think I was successful in making this an amicable split. I should be able to remain friends and have a good reference from this guy moving forward.

I announced it to the small team here at the office and told them it wasn't an easy decision and how much I enjoyed working with everyone.

I will tell my off-shore team on Monday.

Unfortunately, the drama isn't yet over.

I'm going for a second round interview with a company 10 minutes from my house offering generous benefits and 85-100k in salary.

If I land that by some miracle, I'll be having a very awkward conversation with my very new boss at the F500...

Is that also a fortune 500 company? If not, it sort of flies in the face of your narrative that you just want to prove yourself at a big company.

Meh.The want/drive to prove self at bigger company cab become secondary if you get a much shorter commute and/or extra 5-15k

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about chasing more money. Just saying that if he takes this second new job, he will burn a bridge with the fortune 500 company as well as his old boss.

Might not matter in the long run, but his posts have indicated that maintaining his relationship with the first boss is important to him.

Alright, I gotta ask: what damn industry is this and what (general) role do you play? Usually it’s pretty easy to deduce in these threads. Oilfield sales is my best guess.
