Putting MBA after your name on a Business Card...

...total douche move or not?
I'll be transitioning out of the military in the next year and I'm not sure what the appropriate etiquette for this is.

I've only seen it once in an email signature, and my co-workers and I mocked the person who did it.

I don't put J.D. after my name. It's just not necessary. Only acceptable time to do it is if you're putting your name on something related to work you're using that degree for. For example, a legal business card or using your CFA designation in your work bio for your finance job. But just walking around town introducing yourself as Mr. or Mrs. MBA reeks of douche. I want my work product to define me, not my degrees.

I personally don't have a problem with it.

I could care less.
-lnomm34, BSBE, MSBAE, EI
(In case you don't catch onto the sarcasm, it's totally douchey. I wouldn't do it. As an engineer, if I ever get my PE certification, I'd list that, but only because it's very commonplace for Professional Engineers to have that distinction at the end of their name on business cards.)

I don't list PE or especially MBA. Somebody used EI, which to me was hilarious and much worse than MBA.
ETA: When I was four years out of school and did the PE, I did use it on my business card for a few years. Not many people in my age and profession went through with it, so I think it helped in credibility when working with outside companies and the government.

I wouldn't put MBA or JD, personally.
I have no problem with someone putting CPA or CFA on his or her card.

I'd suspect it is industry specific - but I'm fine with it.

About as sad as people who put IT certifications in their salutation in an email

I heard there was an attorney in BR at one point who made people call him "Dr. Atty. John Doe." From what I was told, he was brought before the Bar and they made him stop doing it.

Ok so that little voice in my head saying "don't be a douche" was right again.
I agree with this statement but my work has been flying planes for 8 years so I'm trying to find a way to establish some business credibility during my job search.

Having the MBA on your resume should be plenty for your job search. Putting it behind your name on a business card could actually give a bad impression to some. It's a gigantic douche move IMHO

What you put on your card is for marketing, pure and simple.
So if you want to be a management consultant, MBA is fine and it probably should be there. Personally, I consult federal agencies on getting their books straight, so I feature my CGFM every time but I generally do not mention the MBA I also earned because mostly it is peripheral to what I do.
Each designation serves a purpose, advertise appropriately.

Serious professional designations like CPA and CFA are okay. Degrees are not, especially MBAs. Everyone and their mom has an MBA and putting I after your name is something I associate with people who have awful MBAs and are trying to act like they are in some super cool club with Harvard grads.

Agreed. Certifications go on business cards, degrees go on resumes (unless its a Phd).

This. It was probably more common 40 years ago, but the degree is just so widespread now and every podunk college offers it.

I get a kick out of people who put esquire behind their name. It's going one step further than J.D.
When someone puts e3quire after their name it's very helpful. It tells me a lot about their personality. Note: I'd never hire one and it helps sort through the lawyers to find a good one. Esquire to me equals ambulance chaser.
