This is my 3rd thread started since being dealt multiple job offers, and I've gotten some very actionable advice that has put me in a good spot. Thank you all for that. Now a new dilemma has emerged.

I recently had multiple job offers and accepted one in Minneapolis that will pay roughly 50+% more than my current job in Nola. I told my current company that I would always give them the option to match if they wanted to retain me, but I knew based on our budget, other people's salaries, and their propensity for lowballing, that they wouldn't be able to match this offer. So I accepted and signed the other job offer a few weeks ago.

Last week we had a big meeting with top executives and donors and I guess they finally realized my worth. All of a sudden, they are going hard trying to retain me and told me today they are going to try and match the offer.

At this point, I'm pretty dead set on moving and starting at the new company. The opportunity for growth at the new company is much better as this will be my floor going in, while this would most likely be my ceiling at my current company.

That being said, it does make the decision harder as the move across country is definitely a stress factor along with all the unknowns.

My first thought is to call the new company and be candid about the situation. We have been very open in communications thus far, and I would feel comfortable telling them without fear of them rescinding the offer. We didn't negotiate much on salary so they may have room to increase.

My second thought is I don't want to do anything to frick up the relationship and don't want to be viewed as playing them against each for more money.

What is the proper move here?

TIA

Never take the matching offer. They’ll hold it over your head. It will get toxic. Run.

Which employer is on stronger financial footing?

If the new employer has a strong bottom line that makes moving an easy decision.

You imply that your present employer is pushing it trying to match the offer. If that's true you will be resented if you stay and you have a legitimate explanation for moving on.

Move and enjoy the increased pay and future raises.

I had another offer days before that was significantly lower and they wouldn't even match it, so I knew they wouldn't come close to this one.

Like I said, it wasn't until last week that they all of a sudden were willing to pony up.

Wish I had known this about my last job. This is true. They'll keep you but not promote you.

If you’re young…..

In your head you’ve already checked out of the current employer. Spread your wings and give the new city a try. I can tell you, the first three years will suck but you get used to being away from “home”.

I second someone else’s post on who is on better financial footing, especially now. Not sure which industry you’re in so may not matter.

I left a job 10/2021. Went to a new job and within three weeks I figured out they filled me full of shite (despite me asking point blank questions on deal killers for me before taking the job). I tucked my tail and luckily my old job took me back. BUUUUUT I have had the cloud hanging over my head now for 14 months of being that guy that left and came back. Even though my production was almost 1.5 times the next closest sales guy.

Cross country move is tough, but just don’t burn any bridges on the way out just in case Minn doesn’t work out.

You’ll need that raise for winter clothing and 4WD/AWD vehicles. Lol. But seriously, sounds like a great opportunity—take it.

Don’t renegotiate with the new company, who it sounds like has the best offer (best or equal pay, more ceiling, etc). Not a great way to start a relationship IMO.

Answer this question and you will know the best answer. Would you and your family be better off in 10 years if you take the new job or keep the old one?

I would leave your current job solely based on opportunity for upward mobility. Climb that ladder ASAP.

Do what makes you happy and gives you the best opportunity for success in the long term.

If you are willing to move to Minneapolis (appears to be the case) then take the job and don’t look back.
Just hope you and family are ready for an extremely different climate. Low of 10 degrees tonight which is colder than it’s ever been in Nola.

The relationship after getting back together post breakup is never the same and is always toxic. You’ll be moving to the woke protest capital of the US but you’ll be leaving New Orleans. I’d take the new job.

This tells you everything you need to know.

It took you threatening to leave and multiple meetings to give you your worth. Why would you want to stay here?
