The Trump administration is weighing a plan to slash the 145% tariff on Chinese imports by more than half — effective as soon as next week — as top US and China officials head to Switzerland for high-level trade negotiations, The Post has learned.

Specifically, US officials are discussing a proposal to lower President Trump’s punishing levy on China goods to between 50% and 54% as they begin what promise to be lengthy talks to hammer out a trade agreement, sources close to the negotiations said.

Meanwhile, trade taxes on neighboring south Asian countries would be cut to 25%, the source added.

If they drop theirs for the talks, then that’s fine.

Where are the Twitter hawks with videos of their protests over there?? Chyna isn’t preventing them from coming out are they??

It really doesn’t matter whether you think the deal was good or you think he caved.

Only matters if you thought the tariffs were a real, actual plan.

If you thought Trump was a negotiating mastermind or full of shite from the beginning, you made money. I know which category I fell into.

I thought he caved bigly at first but I’m starting to think he just told people what they wanted to hear so they’d stop freaking out. It’s not a bit or a ruse. He fully intends to radically increase our tariff revenue and have it replace a portion of income tax revenue.

The rollout was terrible because his framing of the objective was terrible. He should have said “it’s 100% a tax and it’s how we’re going to lower income taxes for lower and middle class families. We’re replacing a really shitty tax with a less shitty tax.”

Just reading the comments in the WSJ about the deal with UK shows how much TDS bakes the brains of its victims. There is no deal that will allow any praise for Trump and his team. As he said himself, if he cured cancer they would sit on their hands and fume.

What real deal did he make with the UK? It's the same 10%. Now it's just not on British vehicles, airplane parts, and beef. Whoopty fricking doo.

How does this deal bring back manufacturing to the US? I was told Tariffs would bring manufacturing back to the US.

As someone who is in construction, the timing of this is interesting. I have numerous manufacturers that are having substantial price increases starting next week because of tariffs.

I'm very curious if the decreased tariffs cause these manufacturers to become more competitive. Since Covid, these factories have been able to increase, increase, increase at will.

It's not an earth-shattering deal, but improved our position with non-tariff barriers and made some minor changes. There was very little trade imbalance with the UK, so I didn't expect the US to go for punitive measures. The changes are still estimated at $280 billion per year. More importantly, it builds momentum and offers a template for the EU where the impact will be much larger.

But you do you.

P.S. Trump cured cancer.

Yeah, we're forcing any Scotch distillery that wants to avoid a 2000% tariff to build their distilleries in the USA.

I wish there were more manufacturing happening in the UK, but unfortunately they're in a similar boat as the USA in off-shoring production.

If the total trade between the United Kingdom and the USA was $148.0 billion in 2024 how in the hell is this trade deal going to save $280 billion a year? Make it make sense.

I think your numbers are wildly inaccurate and you need to reevaluate what news outlets you use as sources, just so you don't get embarrassed around people you know, but you do you!
