The income taxes, property taxes and all different flavors of insurance required, etc. have all played part in this unfortunate decision
Glad you came to your senses. These are exactly the reasons I am looking to get OUT of Louisiana when I retire

I have no idea how that place is still relevant and there. Has been there for at least 40-50 years?

Think that is Indian Hills or something like that lol

You guys would lose your $hit when I show you what I'm leaving, but weather, politics and other are simply too much.

I did similar for retirement. There’s a lot about it that sucks - weather & insurance are the politically correct issues that come to mind.
I’ve lived across the U.S. from Hawaii, CA, AZ, FL, VA, AL and am relocating to south Louisiana to ride it out with family. It’s been a good decision. I’m healthy enough to enjoy the food and drink too.

I think Madisonville would be a better option. Still keeps you close to your family and nicer area in my opinion

Believe it or not, there are quite a few places in Jacksonville, FL that are very similar, houses on water, quick trip to blue water, and fishing in the back yard.

Slidell = the Boca Raton of the Gulf Coast.

Madisonville is nice but there are some big differences
-That bridge. Getting into or out of Madisonville across that 190 bridge can be a day ruining experience.
-Fishing- there’s very little fishing except for fresh water fishing. Getting to salt water is a haul.
-Hunting- not much duck hunting close by and The spots that I have been to are pretty bad comparatively. Squirrel, deer, rabbit are good but you need to find someone allowing you on property.
Otherwise though, it’s a charming town. The proximity to Mandeville and covington are good.

As someone raised in Slidell now living in Seattle for the last 10 years .. this is a hilarious thread
I feel some nostaliga fondness for Slidell, but I agree with others here when I say it has fallen off pretty hard. It's a shithole through and through. If you're going to leave the PNW and go to the South, Mississippi honestly sounds like the better option. Can't believe I'm saying that.

Yes, I do notice the liberalism and I am a liberal myself, so it probably won’t surprise you to hear I enjoy it.
Certainly there are fringe leftists (I call them “blue hairs”) who can be tiresome to be around. I work with a few who can just be too much. But that liberal spirit also produces some good outcomes - strong public transit, excellent bike infrastructure, common sense environmental protections to sustain the beauty of the PNW, that kind of thing.
Identity politics is one of the most annoying things liberals love to entertain, and that is true here, but I find it easy to tune out. Living among voters/taxpayers who want a better city for everyone has made Seattle a pretty kick arse place to live for the last decade. The problems in Seattle feel so quaint compared to Louisianas issues..
