single family housing has been 60% off the last three years.
We are going to end up like many other countries where you buy a 5,000 sq ft house then have three families live in it.
I work with a girl from Taiwan who's family does this, the kids went to college then came home and they all pitched in to buy a big house so they have 4 people working to pay the mortgage.

How is the concrete business? They wanted to rake me over the coals a few years ago for a project. Just waiting it out till they get less greedy.

Nothing wrong with that. I’ve thought the same thing. Course everyone has to get along very well.

Or people can just not buy as big of homes? Or stop buying so much other consumer BS.
People can easily afford homes, they just don’t want to.
There’s plenty of homes under 2,000 sq ft around me that are under $400,000.
No this isn’t cheap nor what we would term ‘affordable’ but people can afford them. They just choose to prefer bigger and more expensive.

By flyover states do you mean Texas? Because it’s already happening

Everyone could buy a house that needs repairs and get a house in a good neighborhood at a 50% discount but this discourse against working with your hands for the last 50 years has made that an unthinkable option so people would rather buy a tract home on the edge of prairieville built in a swamp where the doors don’t close right

Construction is hurting that bad? I've been talking to 3 reputable homebuilders about doing an addition and they all seem hungry for the work.
Can't speak to homebuilders but I used to work in the home improvement sector providing marketing. With higher interest rates, refi's have plummeted. Refi's were the lifeblood of home improvement's biggest boom in recent years ('20-'23). It was raining money then. Now it's a trickle. There's many billions of $$ locked up in home equity people don't want to/can't afford to touch at these rates.
Yes, they are very hungry for the work.

Sucks. Knowing what it does to families. All the money we invested in training. Good people and very low turnover. Management all took salary cuts.
Thanks Biden.
It's going to take 3-4 Trump and Vance terms to get America out of the ditch Biden drove America into.

We don’t see housing recovering until 2027. The Fed allowing rates to go so low for so long and huge price increases will take years to rebalance.
Which is why we dont have a free market, Govt fricks it up, "fixes it" then has to fix their frick ups.

See this a lot in the Atlanta suburbs especially areas with high concentrations of Indians, Hispanics, Arabs, Asians. Whole extended family living in a house and 5 cars in driveway. White folks are basically the only people not willing to do this.

Sorry but this was a bipartisan effort. Trump started the insane spending in March 2020. Not to mention paying people to not work, shutting down supply chains and handing out ‘loans’ that were rife with fraud that people didn’t have to pay back. Trump Admin injected an insane amount of liquidity into market in a 10 month timeframe. Biden then continued it. Our Government regardless of party has a spending problem that is out of control. If you think it’s only Joe Biden who got us 37 Trillion in debt you need to reevaluate yourself.

Interesting that there is the narrative that we have a housing crisis.

I couldn’t imagine doing this. Unless it was to move back to in to take care of a sick or aging parent, I’d never want to live under the same roof as another family or adult. Seems miserable.

It would be kind of ironic if all the conspicuous consumption addicted debt to their eyeballs people that bought 5k sq ft houses with no yard for their 3 person families got 14 immigrants as a neighbor
Except then there’d be 14 immigrants in my country :(

The low rates created a bubble. People got addicted to cheap money, now they cant be weaned from it.

White people are still suffering from the effects of colonialism 500 years later
Once we hit the age of majority we all get the urge to leave the parents house and sail to the new world

Won't be getting better anytime soon as job prospects for most of the younger generation that would be the future middle class has been abysmal.
With investment firms buying large portions of the actual housing supply, they are basically forced to rent. Rent is so high they can't save as much.

Have a coworker who is from Colombia and the next door neighbors to him are Colombian also. His neighbors have whole family living in a 4K sqft house grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. he told me he won’t allow his kids to go over there to play with their kids because it’s so overcrowded and nasty. 6 cars in driveway.
