Landlord charging a fee to accept rent
With the COVID situation, my landlord is no longer accepting paper checks for rent, but it is mandatory to pay online. Paying online requires a "convenience fee" over and above the rent, and I'm not talking credit card use, this is a direct bank transfer.

My question: Is it legal for a landlord to command a fee in order to pay rent?

What does your lease say about it?

As a landlord, why wouldn’t I accept a paper check? That makes no sense to me. What does covid have to do with that?

Since they’re not giving alternative method I’d deduct my rent from the fee with a middle finger in the comment. They are lucky to even be getting rent from you in a pandemic much less raising it by not accepting typical methods.

Why the hell doesn’t a landlord have Venmo, cash app, Apple Pay, or PayPal in this day in age? It’s so much easier it’s ridiculous.

this is the answer. if it doesn't say anything about payment methods, or if it doesn't give ll authority to direct how payments should be made, i'd be tempted to just send a paper check. he will have a hard time evicting you in most states in that scenario, but be prepared to document his receipt of the check (certified mail or similar).

That may cost as much as the fee. Curious at to how much he is charging in the way of the fee.
