Wasn't sure which board to post this, but thought MT would enjoy this mindset:

Dear Quentin,
I voted for Kamala Harris in the election. I’m devastated she didn’t win. I don’t think Donald Trump is the right person to lead this country, but that’s not why I’m writing to you. We live in a democracy and I accept the results. It’s almost easier given that Trump won the popular and the electoral vote this time around, so I’ve made peace with the results.

My question is what has happened since the former president will now be our next president: the stock market “Trump bump” or “Trump trades.” It’s not that I feel consoled, but I’m only human and I wasn’t NOT happy that my 401(k) has seen an increase in value. Now I’m wondering whether I should take advantage of this stock-market rally.

It feels disloyal somehow. But I’m 15 years away from retirement, and I need to think about the whole picture. Am I trading off my candidate’s loss? If I do invest, where? I’ve been a Democratic voter my entire life, and I’m a single man who needs to make sure I’m making the smartest decisions possible. I don’t have a big or small inheritance coming my way.

Does that make me a turncoat?

I'll never understand people like that. Of course you try and make money. You absolutely act in a manner that reflects your best interest. Shouldn't even waste a second thinking about much less write out for the world to see.

Yep, no correlation there.

Making money, earning, and investments should be handled separately from your political ideology, or you are just setting yourself up to be wrecked.

This is why almost everyone should have professionals handle their investments. People don't really need to know what they are investing in, they only need to tell the investment group how risk averse they want to be.

Once you actually have money to play with, you can invest in things that you personally believe in because if you lose money on it then it doesn't really affect you.

Wow. I couldn't disagree more. I don't align with either party these days, could not bring myself to vote for Trump, but will absolutely make regardless of president. Always have!

at some point, most sane people will realize that it isn't about social or gender issues.

you have to be able to take care of yours and yours alone because nobody is gonna come save you no matter who is in charge.

People worrying about being disloyal with their money due to the president a low T morons. If you are solely looking at party lines as a reason to invest or not invest, then I don't really know what to say

If they're actually committed to the left-wing ideology and believe the rhetoric that Trump is gonna be horrible for economy, then this is an obvious opportunity to short the market and take advantage of post election rally. Sounds more like he knows better and realizes it thus framing it as a matter of loyalty rather than what's best for nation and economy.

She's regarded.

Brandon's presidency gave us about 50% gainz in the S&P. Orange's first presidency was also about 50%. Jug Ears in his second term? Bout fitty percent. (Before that it would be skewed by regression to the mean after the Great Recession.)

Just let your money work for you. Stonks will be fine either way, unless massive numbers of people start boycotting corporations when their side takes an L in an election. If you really want to invest in an "ethical" manner, choose companies in line with your values.

This voter probably has dozens of dollars in investments.

If I agreed with everything about the opposite party with the exception of getting the market right, i wouldn't have any issue taking advantage of the situation.

You can make money regardless of who's in office.

And for the record, I don't believe politicians move the market in any meaningful manner. If you believe dems make you lose value in the market then it's just a buying opportunity.

I'll push back on this a little with an extreme, but realistic example. I'll caveat this by acknowledging the world we live in is not black and white. It's every shade of gray. We all benefit from the terrible actions of others, both unknowingly and unavoidably.

Let's say I put money in my company-provided retirement fund. I rely on the managers of those funds to invest my money and give me a livable return. As part of a balanced portfolio, the manager spreads my money around. He puts some of my money in Widgets Inc. I don't know this, and I also don't know that Widgets Inc buys parts to make widgets from Gong-Dong Industries based in Northwestern China. Gong-Dong utilizes Uyghur slave labor to manufacture their parts.

Now, I'm morally opposed to slavery, yet my money is being used to perpetuate slavery and oppression. Should I not know that my money is earning more money off the backs of slaves in NW China? I should have a right to know that, and if I care enough about it, then I should actively decide where my disposable income goes.

It's a similar concept to what inspired Thoreau's essay "Civil Disobedience," whereby Thoreau was thrown in jail for refusing to pay taxes because he disagreed with the Mexican-American war and slavery. He was morally opposed to a small portion of his money being used to perpetuate violence and oppression.

Again, that's an extreme example, but it it's a true one. It happens every day. Franklin County Teachers Pension Fund in Anystate, USA is guilty of this. We can argue whether this sort of situation is inescapable an unavoidable in the world we live in, and I don't think any of us would come to a good solution.

All politics aside, be happy about the bump in your fortunes.

Do you think Kamala or Joe (and feel free to substitute your political enemy if the shoe was on the other foot) would care about your 401k if it went the other way?

I completely do not understand why people fret over shite like this.

Way too much virtue signaling really.

Both sides do it to some degree but I do not understand lefty self-guilt at all.

Not all Kamala voters feel the same..

quote:

The Stock Market reacts to what it thinks is GOING TO HAPPEN not what is presently happening. So...When your stocks start plummeting, the gas and grocery prices start rising, and you don't get a Christmas bonus, don't blame the Democrats. It is the Stock Market reacting to the upcoming tariffs that Trump says he is going to put in place. Consequences are a bitch sometimes.

From a loonball relative this morning on the book of faces..

Like tell me you don't understand the stock market with out telling me you don't understand the stock market..
