Also isn’t vesting on PERS 8 years?

Would the new job take away time with your kid? If so, I'd pass. You've only got a few more years of quality time where they are living at home. Might be worth it once they move out though.
This would be my biggest factor. What the work-life balance? On-calls, travel for work, weekends, holidays, PTO...

Stay where you are. We already have enough employees in the state system that can't make decisions for themselves.

45k to 75k? 220k to 250k?
World of difference.

It probably isn't an issue or you'd run, but I have a friend who worked in a state agency pretty high up here in MO, and when a guy with a blue tie got elected, she was out of a job. Now a guy with a red tie is in the job (and likely will be for awhile, but you never know) and she has the job back, but if you're only working at the leisure of someone who may or may not get re-elected, I'd stay where I was at.

If that were here in Louisiana, I would say that's an Unclassified position. Those are positions under an elected official which have no civil service protections, they pay more but you very literally serve at the pleasure of the elected official.
Classified positions pay less but you aren't the spoils of war. Hiring means you have to have qualifications for the position (generally) and there has to be a paper trail of cause for firing someone.
I have no idea how it works in MO though.

Also, remember that since the state (assuming Louisiana) does not pay into Social Security so while your check will be bigger, you'll be subject to the windfall elimination when you retire (even if you already have all your quarters paid into SS).
This! can hit you like a ton of bricks.

Free Tuition for Dependents (I have a middle schooler)
Are you working for a private college or university? I don’t quite understand this?
If you are saying you are going to stay working at 1 school because it’s free tuition I sure as hell wouldn’t plan on my kid going there personally. Especially if you have multiple kids, the chances of that are slim to none multiple kids go there.

Surely you have carry at the PE firm? Has to be worth something, no?

And it makes no sense.
I could get my quarters in and then go to jail for 20 years. Once I got out, I get the full SS benefits available to me.
If I have my quarters but then work for the state for 20 years (ie: participating in the economy), I get stiffed somewhere along the lines of 50%.
I know Graves has been working to get this addressed but it's an uphill battle because the whole idea seems to be to penalize states harshly enough to create enough outcry to force them to participate in SS.

I know quite a few government folks that left government and made way more money in the private sector. This may be the first time I hear about it reversed.
What do you do? What kind of director?

Ah, govt employment. More pay, better retirement.
Posted on 8/19/22 at 5:04 pm to anc
30k a year is a nice bump. By the time your kid heads to school you could more than make up for tuition.
Not to mention advancement. And Pension.
It is really a no brainer if you ask me, unless the 30k is only like a 10-20 percent bump.

You say this in all the threads (and historically you were correct), but now a days a lot of state pensions and the federal pension are not near as high of a percentage as they used to be.

Well, not sure about that. Govt needs to move to a 401K style, the current system is unsustainable for the taxpaying public, which I know they don't care about.
We live near Frankfort, my wife knows a lot of state workers from her time as a lobbyist, and many of them retired between 40-50 years old, and went right back to their jobs and started a second pension. Most of them have vacation homes somewhere else in the south.
Govt pay and benefits are way better in many sectors now than private, and that wasn't the case 50 years ago.
But, I didn't mean to rain on your opportunity, get what you can.
I try to keep my frustration with our govt to the OT/PT threads, so sorry about this one.

Yes. We can choose from about 600 schools. Its a heck of a benefit. Some good ones on the list as well. Baylor, Tulane, Samford, etc.
I’m not saying that’s a bad list, but it’s mostly colleges most people have never heard of.
Your kid could go to an in state school with a partial scholly and cost you $20k total in tuition.
Certainly worth keeping as a consideration but I’m not sure it’s a major benefit.
