Is switching jobs a smart move right now?

I have been at my current job for over 5 years and have a ton of goodwill built up. Competitor has come after me hard and is in the process of making an offer, which I hope will be significantly more. My concern is that I feel very safe at my current job if there are cuts, but I will be the new guy if I leave and potentially be the first to go if there are cuts.

Anyone in the same boat?

I've never worked for a company that lays off people just because they are new first. Most will lay off the worthless people.

Depends on what line of work you are in, personal responsibilities etc etc. I’d say service type work you’re good. Selling goods and products might get a little bumpy.

I’m 49, wife doesn’t work, have a large mortgage, kids in private school etc etc. you get the drift. I wouldn’t move right now but that’s my position. If you are single, renting, no or low car note and can take the gamble then I’d do it.

I’m in commercial real estate lending. It has slowed way way up for me right now. Luckily I’m salaried, have already well surpassed my goal for the year and have some goodwill built in. Nobody is refinancing right now so if I leave none of my customers are coming with me unless they have a new project as it would be dumb to move banks for a 5 handle rate vs the 3 handle rates they have.

My group grew from 1 to 7 between April 2021 to January 2022.

I was the 7th and final added to the group in January.

They laid off everyone except me about 8 weeks ago.

Point is, show up and be better than the rest.

My wife just did.

Large signing bonus and over 10% more per year on a six figure salary. People seem to be willing to pay to get good people more now than ever.

Get the offer. Find out what they think you are worth then approach your current Company to see if they think you are worth that too. Then make a decision.

That’s my thinking. I gave them a bit of an over the top range and said I wasn’t leaving for less. I got the update the last night that they are finishing up checks and approvals and will have a verbal offer shortly.

They are in a bit of a bind because they lost all coverage in NYC and I am the only person at my job that covers this market.

I have two offers right now. Both of mine will be slightly less than what I'm currently making, but with better companies, more opportunities, etc. The biggest perk is that both companies actually have an office that they go to routinely! I can't stand working from home anymore or sitting alone in my corporate HQ every day. I had to move for my sanity.

10% for a job hop kind of sucks, honestly. At least for a white collar job.

Let me let you in on a little secret, your company doesn't care how long you've been with them or how much goodwill you've "built up". If they need to cut people, rest assured you are definitely on that list to get cut and they will cut you without any remorse.

Marketing is the first department to get the axe.

Sales is typically the last.

Trainers and managers are generally in the first half of cutbacks.

One concern may be compensation.
If you are a recent new hire brought in at a higher compensation (recruited) than the current staff, there is a chance that you could be the first to go in a department cut.

Seems idiotic with the current uncertainty, but do whatever you want.

If you hate working from home, think about how much you'll hate being at home and unemployed

Would this be a union job? Unions have been known to have seniority clauses. If not then it's likely they'll go with some form of work product and/or team-player aspect. Maybe find out for certain how they would handle layoffs first (and get it in writing).

How recession-proof is your job? In other words, how necessary is what you do to the function of the business? Are there more people doing the same job at the prospective employer than there are where you are now? For that matter, how recession-proof is your industry?

How stable is your current company vs how stable is the competitor?

Will you have to move? What will be the change in your travel habits? (to/from/for work)

If you leave on good terms, could you go back within 3-6 months (if the position is still available) if things didn't work out at the other place?

We're coming into an economic period where positions are going to be shed quite a bit. It won't shock me to see 5%+ Unemployment by October/November.

With all that said, if you're going to do it then at least try to leave on terms which are as amicable as possible, just in case.

Sales is last? Sales is a complete revolving door at my company. The turnover since I started five years ago is absolutely insane. It’s the content creation/market intelligence people that are by far the safest since that’s our product really.

Not union. White collar. I have been through cuts before at my current job and our group is pretty much bulletproof. Not sure about the other company. I am putting the cart before the horse right now because I am still waiting on the verbal offer.

Risk-reward. See what the offer is. Then see what can be done to mitigate your (legitimate) concerns.

FWIW, I've seen a identical situations turn out badly, which is your fear; but also very very well, which is your hope.

If a great offer is tendered, try offering your current employer a time-limited chance to match. If they don't/can't, then leave on the best terms you can.

You know what's truly idiotic? Doing something you can't fricking stand.

I'm an older guy. I've tried my best to stick out the stay-at-home bullshite. Told my wife last night that I never thought I'd make it 2.5 years. I had hoped our new CEO would make some changes, but he hasn't. Our corporate HQ is here in Bham and that MFer lives in another state entirely!

There's no sense in not being happy with what you do. I'd rather be a WalMart fricking greeter then spend another day in an office by myself or at home by myself.

So, to the OP, if you are unhappy to the point it's hard to do your job and you are depressed, by all means move. If the money at the new gig is ridiculous, make the move. However, if it is only a marginal increase and you like where you are, then don't move.
