Talk to him, teach him, give him learning assignments, make him read, and then let him pick what he wants to invest in. Build the foundation. (And yes, VTSAX)

I would think about putting it in an SP500 etf or a total market index etf.
Its not as sexy as buying some individual stocks but it works to get broad diversification. I read some Warren Buffett advice and he said most retail investors should mainly invest in these type of funds.
I followed his advice on my portfolio.
vstax is a total market index mutual & the VTI is a total market etf .
Doing my own research I dont think ill really be utilizing the possible benefits of an etf over a mutual, this will be a long hold.
Unless im missing something...

Unless you're a genius AND lucky or privy to insider trading, you're better off in the long run just putting it into low cost mutual funds and letting it sit there. Low cost being the key. That is what my 401k and 457b are doing.
That said, I am starting to invest with my brokerage account with some AT picks and seeing if I can make bank with cash as well.

honestly if you are just setting and forgetting....bitcoin. Tell him he cant touch it until college. I wouldnt expect it to continue down the path it has but 500% growth in that time frame is almost a certain. Not many other things can say the same.

Another good option. Prolly higher upside than even BTC.
OP if this is college money, the play is in Crypto.

Even as a crypto guy, this digital card shite is so dumb
Physical cards will always be a bigger deal, especially non-modern cards.

Terrible idea. KO hasn't been a good investment in years.
SPY & QQQ trounce it if you want passive investments.

If you’d have put $3500 in DELL in 1990, by 2000 it would have been about $350,000.

I could see coke and other sodas under attack in our future given how bad they are for you, but it’s got nothing on alcohol

If he truly is investing for a lifetime, a good, broad low cost index fund will do the job.
Fidelity has 3 completely “free” funds.
