My dad use to do surveys for the agricultural department. Doctors and others would have trees or a few cattle in order to write off the property and have it in the farm program.

In this case, not an income deduction, but a property tax one.

Property tax is insane theft. The government gets to rip money from you year after year until the end of time simply for existing.

Want to be a hermit and live off the land on a piece of property you own free and clear, growing your own food and creating your own power and water? Still gotta pay property tax.

And that’s a helluva lot better than paying the state or federal government a percentage of your income.

Keep your tax dollars local people.

Do you think productivity and commerce would increase, stay the same or decrease with lessened/eliminated sales or income taxes?

Considering that rising sales taxes appear to have done little to nothing to curb the appetite of American consumers, I would posit that there would be very little, if any, change. My guess would be more on the “very little” side of the ledger. And that’s with sales taxes upwards of 10% in some areas.

In my perfect world (in which the government still exists), we’d be talking about sales tax in the low single digits and no other taxes whatsoever. And in that paradigm, no, I can’t fathom it having a statistically significant impact on commerce.

Eta: I just realized that you slid income taxes in there as well, which is utterly irrelevant to the discussion, as that’s not a consumption tax.

That's the point. If you retire and no longer have income and just feed yourself, you still have to pay the government just for living on your paid for property.

Yes, because there are still government infrastructure that needs supported. What if everyone did this, as an example?

You are still driving on roads, you are still likely using a public utility, etc.

Here pretty soon there will be a methane tax on all cattle so I wouldn’t sink anything into this idea

Fuel tax covers roads. If you use public utilities you pay the fees and baked into and added onto those services.

I mbe done surveys specifically for rhe Farm Bill. Got to love when you're told that brand new f350 is only good for one season and they would need another

Sorta like beekeeping. There are a lot of write offs initially and any trip you take , within reason, the mileage can be written off.

You don’t think the private sector is capable of building roads and doing a better job than government?

Which part? My father in law had the exemption so the exemption 100% existed in the last 10-15 years.

And they absolutely changed the laws in certain counties because we have some friends that raise bucking bulls in the same county as the father in-laws and they filed for the extension but were denied because they had to be in operation for 3 years before they qualified for the exemption. The county relied on googles historical maps to determine they didn’t have the bulls there for the 3 year requirement.

It’s just an ag exemption to help in reducing property taxes. Varies state to state. Honey bees can be counted in certain cases.
