Trade deficits are a natural part of trade.

It will never be equal but many trade deficits are due to practices putting American businesses at a disadvantage. If it is purely a natural deficit, the only likely action is talking to them about making a deal to buy more American products if possible, via incentives.

Trump has also made it very clear he is willing to use the USA military to increase revenue. Some of those trade deficit countries could probably use a little paid protection.

Maybe. Maybe not. Depends on why they are doing it. Biden raised tariffs on China in 2024 and I don't remember many have come aparts about it. Not saying it is the exact same scenario, but their purpose was the same.

Why not? We are owed a lot of $ for the protection we have provided much of the rest of the world. Nobody complained when we were doing it for free but now that Trump wants them to pay for it, it is bad?

We can have a presence in other countries without being involved in conflict. That a huge part of peace through strength.

This. You’d be hard pressed to find many people that wouldn’t be on board with bringing manufacturing back to the United States and making sure America isn’t being taken advantage of when it comes to tariffs.

The method of which they are going about it is the issue. It’s reckless

Why not sit with CEO’s of the largest US companies. Tell them you are going to cut taxes and “negotiate” with them to make sure savings are used for US investment for manufacturing, apprenticeships. Give tax breaks to buy American goods.

Not many have seemed to have an answer, so I'll ask here. What other methods are available to get the other countries to eliminate their current trade policies?

Absolutely, tribalism is slowly destroying this country.

Present this scenario to either party in a vacuum removing any political affiliation and 99.99% of people in this country would renounce this whole situation.

At least some big names are calling it out now Like Ackman, Musk, Rand, Rogan etc. Maybe that will open some people's eyes.

While your point is valid, this is not a good example. Stellantis current issues are unrelated to tariffs and a direct result of their mismanagement of the Mopar brands since they purchased them.

We had presence in other/developing countries via aid programs that were recently cut under the guise of wasteful spending and fraud. We absolutely do not under any circumstance need military presence in countries where it doesn’t already exist. Didn’t Trump campaign on cuts to military spending and withdrawing troops from conflict areas…or “America First” downsized global presence? But we should put troops in potential conflict areas in exchange for trade??

I think this will leave a black eye for some time, but the dust will settle and we will prosper. It does seem a bit excessive and unnecessary though, and I feel that the trade balance with China will never be permantly “fair” because Americans crave cheap Chinese junk.

Truest response here. If President Kamala Harris was tanking the stock market by starting a trade war and restraining free trade, no one here would be singing the virtues of protectionism or bringing back manufacturing jobs or new trade deals. People here would be calling for an armed insurrection.

Or, hear me out, talk with the owners of small and medium sized businesses. frick those big companies. They're the ones that helped us get in this mess in the first place.

Agreed, as the small and mediums will bear the brunt of this. I believe you made a post outlining your business and you have limited choices on where to source certain materials.
