Has anyone ever been at the top of their pay band?

I work at a fairly small plant, far from headquarters, and have reached to top of my pay band. Ive sort of been told but not yet had a meeting with HR about what this technically means going forward. Ive heard on-the-spot bonuses and things like that but nothing concrete.

Ive still got around 10 years to work before retirement and missing out on compounded cost of living adjustments (at a minimum) adds up to quite a lot. Yearly bonuses to match cost of living surely wont be compounded.

This ever happened to anyone? Trying to decide if its time to go.

Usually pay bands are expanded each year with cola adjustments, at least that’s my experience.

I would have been there this year but last year they raised the cap up about 10%. But they hadn’t raised it in a while so I’ll probably catch it before they bump it again in 10 years

What sucks is I think once you top out at my company they just give you like $1000 to $1500 bonus vs the percentage you normally would have been eligible before the top out. I’d be ok with 4%-6% spot bonus if I was topped out but the $1000 to $1500 blows.

One of our System Administrators topped out and what they did is raise his annual bonus percentage and give him a one time payout every year to make up for it.

One of my guys is maxed out. Starting this year he will get a bonus of whatever his raise would have been, but his base will not increase. He is closer to retirement than you are though. He's supposedly fine with it, or at least that what he told me.

According to all my ex-bosses, yes, almost everywhere I ever worked. It was an excuse for low to no raises.

Some places allow for pay to extend beyond the published band, say like 120% for cases where the employee is valued but bound by a narrow area of skill for promotions, or, a lack of opportunities.

I’m 43 and should have it maxed by 46 so I will go without a raise for a while if I stay in my same roll.

Where are you going to go? If you are at a plant and have been there a long time, its not exactly easy to change is it?

The benefit of retiring somewhere you have been a hell of along time is that you have a lot of experience and seniority. To the point that not making top pay maybe worth it.

The last two (including current) mega corps don't give a damn if I don't get anything more than a COLA raise for the next ten years. The difference in my old job was that there was flexibility on bonuses, and my boss knew how often I flew and took the jobs everyone else was scared of. Current corp doesn't two shits, and I've been looking for a way out for almost a year and a half.
