I have been buying silver the past several months. I wanted too start this years ago but never got off my arse to do so. I am not looking to get rich or hit it big over night. I just like picking up coins when I can.
I buy through a friend. His family gathers up orders and make one big order each month saving on shipping. Charges me nothing to do so. Prices are pretty good.

I haven't bought any gold yet but may one day. Anyone else here buy silver or gold? Any local recomendations?

Yes, we buy millions of dollars a year in physical gold and silver for our clients. We buy anything from bars to eagles and more. We go through a dealer that our B/D requires and we get pretty good pricing because of the B/D's volume.

The gold etf gld is a good one...no buying and saling commission and can be sold quickly.

I got pissed off at my local dealer and called these guys:

Blanchard

Their office is on Poydras in NOLA.

I haven't made any purchases through them yet, but I talked to one of their reps and he seemed knowledgeable and helpful. The only thing is that they don't have any retail space, so they ship your purchase to you. I've managed to buy quite a bit to this point with NO paper trail, and I'm a little hesitant to start one now. But I'll probably give in and start going through these guys.

You might want to give them a call.

Don't forget, if you buy less than $1,000 for a purchase, you will be charged sales tax, otherwise it's considered an investment.

What is the going price from dealers for US silver coins (pre-1964) such as dimes, quarters, half-dollars and dollars (non-collectible silver dollars, just the run of the mill silver dollars)?

Anybody is free to answer, not just the OP.

ETA: The reason I ask is I cleaned out an old chest-of-drawers this past week and came across a stash of US silver coins...must be almost 100 of them of various denominations, including silver dollars. Am I rich?

For 100 junk silver coins, probably 75-80% of spot. They should all be 90% silver, so weight of coins x .9 x .75 x spot price should give you an idea.

So how much do dimes weigh? Quarters? Halves? Dollars?

A nickel weighs 5 grams, which is more than a ruby-throated hummingbird. That's the only one I know off the top of my head. Try google, and you will find pages like:

I'd also recommend getting a copy of The Red Book of U.S. coins next time you're in Barnes & Noble or ordering something from Amazon. It's like $15 or so and has a lot of interesting information on every U.S. coin ever made, including historical background, weight, metal content, and value (at time of publication) broken down by year and mint and grade, with discussion of any peculiarities that may make a given coin collectible. It's worth having even if you're not a serious coin collector. Who knows, maybe one of your random coins has some collectible value. It's not likely, but I'd definitely check it out.

The only coin I found which might be somewhat valuable is a 1883 silver dollar minted in New Orleans. It is in very good, if not excellent, condition. The "O" is very prominent under the eagle.

Eta: there was also a 1902 Indian head penny.

Are you sure that's a penny? I think most Indian head denomination coins are something like 90% gold.

The latest edition Red Book at Barnes and Nobles is a good reference book to have.

I started collecting rare gold coins within several years ago and just started collecting silver and platinum as well. I personally think it's a great long term investment with the right dealer.
If you have a buddy you trust then I would just go through him. I have a friend in Mandeville that used to be with Blanchard now on his own and does well. If you're interested email me at billywalker76@hotmail.com

My friend buys from CNI. Anything over $2500 is free shipping. We all pool our money together and order. His family has been doing so for a very long time. No paper trail. I give him money and my order, he returns my change and product when it comes in. His dad that makes the order however has ordered well over a million dollars worth over the years.

Big timer I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to get there, but who knows. And if I did I don't know if I'd put that much in to gold and silver. I guess only time will tell

I don't think my friend ever charges me shipping. My order does however have to be so big to not get hit with parish sales tax.
