First baby purchases

Wife is 9 weeks pregnant with our 1st child. (Thank you very much) She's frantically and excitedly searching the internet for the best of everything. Strollers, cribs, car seats, etc. To all you experienced parents, please guide me to make the best (both economically and practically) decisions possible. TIA.

First. Congrats!
Second. You don't need "the best".
Go ahead and start buying diapers now. When you go to the store just grab a pack.
You need a good bit of spit up cloths. Baby wipes.
When buying clothes, consignment sales are your friends. The baby will probably wear the clothes once maybe twice. Kid grows fast.
Is your wife going to breast feed? Will save you lots of money.
Eta:
For car seats, call your auto insurance. Some offer deals. For example, Alfa offers a great car seat for only $25 where some may costs a couple hundred in the store.

Congratulations!
On the bigger stuff, target all the specific items you'd want (multiple strollers, car seats, cribs etc). Watch those items and buy them when they go on sale...which they certainly will.
We used target and baby's r us. And just kept checking their weekly sales every week.

I wouldn't buy much of anything yet. Economically, go to yard sales, check Craigslist, and accept free stuff from people you know with kids. Your wife may not be cool with that though. We survived with cheap/free everything...that name brand stuff adds up fast. If you buy new, buy a stroller combo that comes with a bucket car seat to use for first year...Walmart makes a cheap one.
Two important (to me) things to look for are a Bjorn carrier and an ergo carrier..good luck

There is a great site called baby gear lab, check it out. They do great reviews on all products like strollers, carriers, etc.
But my advice, that will surely be ignored, is don't buy too much before the kid is born. It's impossible to predict what they will like and be comfortable with. Also, avoid Graco if you can. They are an economical choice, but Everything we have bought from them has a stupid design flaw that either makes it hard on you, or awkward for baby. We are really happy with Chicco key fit car seat with click in stroller.
Lastly, rock and play and magic Merlin sleep suit will make your life easier, as they might help let you get some sleep. Can't imagine not using those, the sleepsuit got him sleeping for more than 3 hours at a time.
Congrats!

The best decision you can possibly make is to agree with your wife that her choices are perfect.
eta The Baby Bjorn bouncer is the shite.
Also, get a car seat that is an all in one. We have the Grace 4Ever and it's awesome.

+1 on consignment and thrift stores for everything except car seat. You don't need the $$$$$ car seat but do get one that fits your car and can latch onto stroller for when baby is young.
My advice is to NOT buy the convertible car seat that last for 3-5 years. You kid will barf on it dozens of time and washing can only do so much. Just get a new seat every 18-24 months as the kid grows.

Are y'all having a baby shower? We were gifted most of the little things we needed and bought our car seat with gift cards.
The largest most important purchase we made was his crib and furniture. simplybabyfurniture.com was significantly cheaper than any name brand store we shopped. The back board of the crib was shipped with a bad crack but they replaced it with no problem.
Don't get fancy thinking you need crap like a diaper genie or $1,000 swing. You need onesies, diapers, pacifiers and bottles.
Secondary we had a rocker next to the bed for the first 6 months, a swing, and a interactive pad when we put him on the ground.
We didn't use half the crap we thought we did.

Some have said you don't have to spend the most, and that's true to an extent. But, when it comes to certain items such as car seats, I don't agree. Don't go for gadgets, go for safety. Stroller is probably another place to invest. No need to get a 2k stroller, but it may be worth it to spend $100 more for a better stroller.
Do not buy cases of newborn diapers. You may need them, but you might not. My son was big. He was in NB diapers for like 3 days. We had a whole case left over.

Also the Ubbi diaper pail is awesome.
It uses regular trash bags.

The people suggesting consignment stores and garage sales..... Good luck convincing the wife of that on the FIRST CHILD

Definitely get a Boppy. They are a lifesaver for naps or when the baby wants to chill and you need to do something like eat.

As someone mentioned, clothes are where much money is wasted.
My son is two months old. Had to move out of the Newborn clothes by 3 weeks and we still keep reusing a few different outfits.
Unless it is something LSU that we want, we just buy second hand. Plus other people will probably give you a lot.

Just chiming in to 2nd the "rock and play". Absolutely a must have in my opinion. Our girl slept in that for the first few months (right beside our bed) and it was easy to move from room to room. Newborns sleep A LOT. Maybe not when you want them to, but they take a lot of naps. The rock and play works great for this.

Business idea.
You type in your due date and then select from 3 levels: Budget, Moderate, Luxury. It tells you when you need to order all the key things and gives you a few options in your price range and they show up at your door. You enter milestones as you go and it suggest major purchases.
Profit.

I read this thread to Mrs Azazello and she had a look of horror when I started mentioning "craigslist, garage sales, consignment stores"
It's simply impossible to overcome a lifetime of marketing.
O well
