Subscription fees are a great way to decimate a site's user base (and advertising base). Plus you have to look at how many kids are on that are under 18 that couldn't pay even if they wanted to.

Won't ever happen.

The moment they start charging for Facebook, Facebook will quickly fade in to obscurity.

Right. And obviously they're making money with it being free. Why change anything?

Facebook has no plans to ever institute a membership fee. At least under their current format. Facebook is basically a website that has the attention of 1 billion people worldwide and hasn't figured out a way to fully capitalize off that yet. I think advertising will only get them so far.

I'd pay 100x more for td.com membership. And I'm not joking.

As Tigerroar.com found out, you just can't charge for "membership". Tigerroar had the monopoly. They were THE LSU site. Then, the guy who ran it decided to charge people $32/year. That doesn't sound like much, but it pretty much put the site out of business.

Why?

Because there was someone out there willing to provide the same "service" for free, i.e., Tigerdroppings.

Now, Tigerdroppings is THE LSU website.

The same thing would happen to Facebook if they ever decided to sell. Someone would step up and off the same thing for free. That person/organization would be more than happy to live off the revenue from advertising rather than charging the subscribers, just like Tigerdroppings.

I would pay zero and a lot of that is based on how many other people would pay the fee, you can pay the fee all you want but if the other users don't, there is no value...nobody wants to read their own status updates over and over

I agree. The posters make this site awesome to read and the admins do a good job of "letting them play."

The layout is good too.

I think the best way to monetize these is create tiered services. Not sure what you could actually pay extra for...

You have no imagination - there are numerous ways to make FB profitable - massively profitable without charging something so pedestrian as a site killing subscription fee. Google and Amzn are quaking in there boots...why do you think Google is flailing around with this Google+ bullshite....they know...

Let's not act like this is the first thing Google has ever tried to do. They invest a ton of money in random shite, most we never even hear about.

I don't see google going down anytime soon.

If FB builds in a search engine.....think about all the photos women look at of other women...clothes/products they see that their friends have...if they could scroll over and see what it is...then order it through FB. One stop.

FB could buy pinterest and give it some direction. That would be a good start.

Every time they've tried something like that its failed so miserably that miserably is an understatement. The last time was when they just wanted people to identify what they bought on sites like Amazon or a movie they just watched on netflix. People backlashed so hard they rolled it back in less than a week.

I doubt anyone beats Google at their own game. Not saying it won't happen, I just don't see it.

You're just married to a position and an opinion of FB.
