Anyone building a home right now? I am in the beginning stages of the process and am trying to get an idea of price per sqft in central louisiana. Also if anyone can recommend a builder in the Alexandria/DeRidder/Lake Charles area I would appreciate it!

I have friends who have used Shane Dauzat for custom builds in Alex/Pineville area and speak very highly of him.

not counting land.... I've seen and heard the $140/$150 number thrown out there for a "custom" home. But what I think they mean is a new home with a unique floor plan in a new subdivision. Yes the layout is unique/custom, but the feel of the houses are the same....drywall throughout, very little true woodwork, standard "upgrade" fixtures, etc. True higher end work is more like $180-200, and up. i've also seen $100-120 for builder grade or homeowner can do some of the work themselves.

After going through 2 builds and speaking with lots of others in similar situation, I'm convinced these $/ft prices people talk about are simply the quoted price they remember getting in the contract. There can potentially be, and in my experience usually are many other expenses that add up that people simply forget to include in the contract, or plan to have done once they have moved in. Plans, wells and on-site septic if no public water/sewer, driveway, landscaping and any outdoor/hardscaping or outbuildings are also big ones. Anything outside the footprint the house is often excluded when contractors are bidding on a project; anything to get the price down. I've had bidders exclude, plumbing, main electrical hookup, fixtures, etc. Sure the house is $150, but throw in those expenses after the fact or with a different contractor and it all really adds up. So the cost of the whole project is often much more than simply the $/sqft price you were quoted from a contractor, even IF you AND the contractor actually stick to the contract, don't make changes, and he delivers exactly what you wanted.

It can be very rewarding to build your own home. But be warned, it is not for the faint of heart and new construction is VERY expensive these days.

Currently building in Kolin... that screams Central LA, right. Going to land $150/$160 sqft with land before it’s all over (4 to 5 more weeks). $130/$135 if you remove the land cost.

$150/sq ft for a “general” custom home. It can run up to 200 for upper end.

I’m building in Baton Rouge right now and it will be about $160 a square foot. With land about $195 a square for .83 acres and 3500 sqft.

3514 living and over 5000 under roof. 5 full bath outdoor kitchen, pool bath, heated and chilled pool and hot tub. Once I did all my fencing and generator I’m way over $200 sqft with the land.

Would love to see picture of inside and outside to understand what your price per sq ft get you. I’ll hopefully start building at the end of the year

You can go to Manuel Builders and trick out a 2000sqft house for about 155sqft. Or you can hire a designer, decorator, and constructor for about 155-200sqft. From Alexandria to LC to BR basically. Those are under roofline prices, not including land, sitework, and utilities outside of the building layout.

This seems really cheap for Baton Rouge. I haven't seen anything close to this in a long time, especially for a custom home.
