Money board, I think it’s time for me to get a new credit card with better rewards. I currently only have one credit card and it has very little in regards to points or rewards. My wife has a capital one venture and we pretty much use this for most purchases now. We both have great jobs so worrying about debt/paying it off isn’t really an issue. Honestly this should’ve happened a long time ago. I’m currently not getting any utilization out of the card that I have.

We do travel, but I don’t want the rewards to be based solely around airline miles. Maybe one that has cash back too.
There are just so many out there I don’t really know where to start.
Or Should I just get a joint capital one venture card with her and use that to the full extent?

Said you like to travel, southwest is offering a companion pass. Your wife can fly with you free for a year.

Sounds like a good deal but unfortunately no southwest at my city’s airport.

I like Marriott Rewards - it works for me and the family.

A bit worried about the upcoming changes to the tier structure and Sheraton merger.

I just finished a free week using Marriott points at a resort - to deplete my points inc case Marriott devalues them.

Prior to covid, when I travels all the time, AmEx platinum was really good for me.

Chase Sapphire Preferred/Reserve along with the other cards in the Ultimate Rewards program is still the best deal IMO.

Care to elaborate a little more about them? We do bank through chase so that may not be a bad option for me

Head over to youtube. Literally hundreds of vids on what cards are best for whom. They will break it all down for you.

True

This may sound weird, but I almost trust what normal dudes with everyday experiences on tigersroppings say over mainstream YouTube videos and website reviews probably paid for by cc companies

Most of my money goes towards groceries, gas, and streaming services.

My Amex Blue Cash Preferred gives me 6% cash back on groceries, 3% back on gas, and 3% back on streaming services.

Good simple option. Although it goes into an investment account (which I like but other people may not prefer).

There's an incredibly long money board thread on exactly this subject FWIW.

People who travel a lot for business like some rewards cards I have little interest in. Picking the best credit cards for rewards are a lot about your spending and lifestyle habits more than a general answer

I have the chase freedom and sapphire reserve. Points can be transferred between cards. Chase freedom has two options for points, for me the 1.5% for all purchases is the better deal. I use the freedom for everything except whatever the sapphire pays 3% ( restaurants and hotels),

When I first got the sapphire, the high fees for the reserve put me off so I went with the preferred. After I learned more of what the benefits were of the reserve, I switched to reserve. Sign up bonus was outstanding on the reserve recently but think that might be over, not sure what it is now.

We have Amex blue cash preferred. 6% back on groceries up to 6 grand. 6% on any streaming services. 3% back on gas/transit. 1% on everything else. Not really geared for travel stuff but a great card for the times. 95$ annual fee but you get a 250 credit if you spend a certain amount in first several months. We have a US bank card for restaurants and when when max out the grocery rewards on Amex.

Freedom has been paying 3% on restaurants awhile now. So everything but travel has been going on my Freedom.

I'd suggest one of the Chase Sapphire cards as you'll accumulate points that can be used to purchase travel or to transfer to travel partners. Then you have flexibility on how you use your points. Amex points work the same way and Amex has even more transfer partners.

Don’t get an authorized user on your wife’s. If you like capital one, have your wife refer you for the venture x and then get your own. She will get a referral bonus and you will get the 100k offer (which expires next week).

Then, have your wife apply for the chase sapphire. After you hit the spending requirement to get the capital one bonus, have your wife refer you to get the chase sapphire. Those are two great cards for each of you to have.

By this time next year, you should have 300,000 -400,000 points combined and both are great flexible cards that transfer to many different partners (hotel, airlines, cash, gift cards etc). Also, log in weekly and see what extra offers they have. Frequently, there are 10% cash back to common stores like academy, JC Penny, Airbnb etc

Right. I forgot about that. I’m just in the habit of using the sapphire at a restaurant. Do you know if that change is permanent?

Here are some recent threads. You really just need to decide what’s best for you.

Usual suggestions always end up being Chase Sapphire, Capital One Venture/Venture X, AMEX blue and Delta.

I have this and it's pretty solid. amex offers usually helps to offset the annual fee.
