In a societal breakdown, post-apocalyptic world, I think I'd rather have guns, ammo, and canned goods than some metal. So I guess only in a truly survival mode world

This is completely true for pretty much everyone but there will always be older metals bugs that will place high value on gold/silver during the times you mention. I for one would not trade a single bullet for a pound of gold unless there would a clear path of returning to a semblance of normal life at some point in the future. If things are grim, then metals aren't worth much more than a hard object to bash someone in the head with. If hope if on the horizon, then maybe they provide some future value when society tries to reestablish commercial norms.

Your gold is completely worthless if you are declared an enemy of the state by the soveriegn the gold is located in. See Russian dollar reserves, oligarch assets etc...
