So sue me cause this is mainly a car question but there's no car board. However, since SUVs are expensive as hell, this is also partially a $$ question.

Wife and I are looking at SUVs for growing family. So yes, we need an SUV. My question becomes, which is the better bang for buck (at a high level) given the prices of the SUVs:

1) New/slightly used Toyota 4Runner
2) New/slightly used Volvo XC60
3) New/slightly used Jeep Grand Cherokee

Anyone have any experiences with any of these. Seeing as how all of these are ~40k new, what's this boards thoughts?

4 Runner or Honda Pilot.

Best resale, best reliability, and you should be able to get a very nice used one for 30 ish.

Own a 4Runner currently and owned another before. SO has a highlander. We love them and they don't break ever and have a solid resale.

That last part can be tricky when buying used though, so it's good and bad I suppose.

4Runner is going to ride more like a utility vehicle than the others. If that's an issue for you, stay away. They are extremely reliable and hold their value well though.

If I were in the market for a new SUV, I'd likely be starting with the Grand Cherokee.

Love the look of the GC but not the history of reliability.

2016 Pilot or a used Highlander is what I'm sure the wife will wind up going with.

I'm a Toyota guy and a Chrysler basher, generally. I will give them some credit - of vehicles in that class, the Grand Cherokee has a lot of capability - it is perhaps the most truly capable off-road vehicle in the entire class.

Having said that, the reliability issue raises its ugly head and that brings the 4Runner back to the top of the list.

No you don't, you just don't want a minivan.

Well, true. But if I were gonna get a minivan, why not just get an SUV and keep my last shred of dignity?

So I guess out of those 3, I'm kinda hearing:
Toyota 4Runner >= Jeep GC > Volvo XC60?

Interesting cause I've always thought highly of Volvo and safety and everything.

I just don't think of Volvo - at all. How long have they been making these things? Toyota has been making the Land Cruiser since 1951. Their trucks (and the 4Runner is a truck - not a car pretending to be a truck) have a reputation for bulletproof reliability - to the point that they are substitutes for combat vehicles in the Third World.

The Volvo might be fine, but it is a station wagon - however well made. If that's what you want - it will probably be okay.

Hands down 4Runner wins out of those 3.

The Volvo just doesn't belong. Not that it's a bad vehicle, but its more of an apples to oranges comparison.

Dodge makes nice looking vehicles, but their overall reliability across the board is awful. I would not buy one, even though I would agree, they are good looking vehicles.

Have you looked into a used ecoboost explorer? My parents just went through buying a new SUV and looked at quite a few, including all your above choices and the Audi and VW suv's. They settled on a Ecoboost explorer sport. It's her third explorer but that played no factor in the decision, they were just looking for the best bang for the buck and reliability. It's hella fun to drive with the turbo and AWD also

Hey Coach, are the prices for the 2016 Pilot Elite moving down at all yet?

We've thought about explorer as well. My last option would be an Acura MDX. Hear those things are reliable and hold resale value but is 4Runner still > Acura MDX?

We had a 4Runner, bought it new in 2003 and sold it 2 months ago to a co-worker for 1/3 of the purchase price. Easily, 4runner.
