I transferred some money from an old account to a current account and they froze both accounts. I don't have access to the funds. All I know is it's going to take 30-60 days for their 'back office' to look into this. All the numbers I get send me to some Indian reading from a script and then hanging up.

Has this happened to anyone else?

The whole “scam” of these high yield savings online banks is there are no physical locations even if it’s associated with a legit bank that has locations. Citi accelerate savings is not available in states with physical locations. Not sure if this is a HYSA but that’s how they can afford to pay high rates while forcing you to use foreign phone customer service.

Gets like that with them big banks. Everybody loves those rates but the minute you have a question or need something, you're talkin' to a fella in Sri Lanka about an account in the US.

Find you a good community bank whose business model is predicated on doing right by their customers. Then, you can call the officer on your account on his cell phone on a Saturday morning -- not a random hotline.

Agree 100%

I will never understand why some opt for the big national banks for bank accounts, mortgages, etc. The service is horrible and they are so big they give zero F's

Check with a banker but I believe there are federal regs requiring timely resolution.
Check with Consumer Protection Financial Board or whatever that agency is called….

Spot on, there are some major missing details.

Anyone in a national bank, get the heck out.

I think you have been hacked.

I think by law depositors can not go without access to their money no more than 72 hours. Reason why banks are open and not closed the day (Friday) after Thanksgiving. I use to wonder why they just didn't close on the day after Thanksgiving and get a four day weekend.

lol. Bankers don’t like working on the weekends ever in my experience.

The rest of your advice is spot on

If I’m borrowing money, I want the lowest possible rate. Idgaf about the service on a regular loan or mortgage - I just pay the note. My experience has been that no “small” bank can match larger bank loan rates.

If I’m borrowing for a business or something a bit more specialized, I understand looking for service over strictly rate.

As for checking accounts, I can understand service being important when there is a problem. That being said, I haven’t stepped foot in a bank in 6 years, and I’ve bought a vehicle and a house over that time frame. These types of “my account is frozen” situations are so exceptionally rare that I’d rather a bank have the mobile and online services that I need over being able to talk to a person.

To each their own.

Yes, somewhat similar to you. Citibank is the worst. I deposited $100k into their hysa after we sold our house a couple of years ago, but couldn’t verify my wife as a joint account holder, because I mixed up our new addresses. They gladly and easily took the money from our Capital One account through wire transfer overnight. A couple of weeks go by and I get a notice saying they are closing the account, because my wife’s identity couldn’t be verified. In which case I said cool, send the money back. They replied with, because we couldn’t confirm identity, I had to provide all these documents proving our identities. Long story short it took 4 out 5 months to get the money back.

I can’t remember if I contacted a bank manager at a physical location or if I finally talked to a supervisor who gave a shite or knew what they were doing at a call center. I just know I was on the phone constantly trying to get my money back.

If you are talking a significant amount of money, I would personally find the closest brick and mortar and work on finding their local phone number. Call and talk to a banker there and force them to help you, and then tell them that you are going to bring your documentation with you and stay at the bank until its completed. I'd drive 5 hours to get $100k+ released in a heart heart, as said it could be 4-5+ months otherwise.
