The White House clarified to CNBC’s Eamon Javers that the tariff rate on Beijing comes in addition to existing 20% tariffs on imports from China, meaning the true tariff rate on China is 54%.

Why would they counter tariffs since that’s just a tax on themselves? Also, the US exports 1/3 of what it imports from China. How does escalation help any country that has a favorable trade balance with the US?

They can mitigate this by importing more goods from other countries that aren't trying to start a global trade war
Brazil will likely be one of the countries that benefits the most from this nonsense. They can fill some of the agricultural exports that China won't be buying from us now.

Is Brazil going to buy $400B from China though? That’s the issue. Who dumps $400B into their economy?

It also wouldn't impact anything for china other than increase the gov revenue. Most american products or services sold to china are luxury/status symbols. Their rich wont care about any increased costs.

Counter measures are allowing their American manufacturers to move to Viet Nam who just dropped their tariffs.

China can't feed themselves. They have no bargaining power here.

The key is to take from China and spread it out. Encourage removing manufacturing from China and then move to Vietnam, Singapore, India, etc.
There is no need to try and move it all to one place.

It doesn't help the other nation, but they know especially China and Russia that the resolve of the American is paper thin, so they will hold on, if possible for Trump to leave office to score a sweeter deal with the democrats.
