Checking account for a child

My 8 year old is asking about getting a bank account. She’s pretty smart and was inquisitive about how deposits and debit cards work. She makes cash at birthdays, holidays, and allowances.
Does anyone have suggestions of banks or account products for her to begin the process? Of course I understand an adult must oversee the account.

Capital One Savings is what I would recommend, not checking. Checking is good when she’s a little older and needs it when she’s out with friends, has a job etc.

We use USAA and it is super easy to setup a kids checking account. With their account they have full access with their own app (if they have a tablet or phone) and it also shows up under my accounts in my USAA app. So I can see all activity and quickly send or remove money as needed. The account comes with free checks and a debit card. The debit card fully works with apple pay/google pay. Apparently not all minor debit cards work with those.
I believe the USAA account drops me off of it once my kids turn 18, if I remember right. I dont have to do anything later to separate them.

Ditto for USAA. No age restriction and it shows up listed in your accounts and your child only sees their account in app or website.
Simple to move money back and forth.

Capital One has a “Teen” checking account for ages 8+.
As mentioned, it gives them access to the account in the app, a debit card, etc. The account shows up under the parent’s account and you can set up allowances, control spending, etc.

If you don’t want to go all in with the checking account, just manually create a “savings” account within yours and add some interest each month. Track the total balance monthly in a spreadsheet or the like.

We started both our girls with a Greenlight account. You can deposit money via an app that links to your bank account. It work like a regular debit card. Its a good way for them to learn before a real checking account.

I have my 7 yr old set up with a Cap1 Savings that is connected to my login. Whenever he gets money for a present, job, etc, he gives me the cash and I transfer from my account to his. He likes the fact that it earns interest each month even though its just a couple dollars a month

Check local banks/Credit Unions- my kids have accounts that pay them $25 every 9 weeks they bring in an A/B report card. I know Chase has one that’s connected to your account, too, but I’m not familiar with any benefits it might offer

We opened up savings accounts at a local credit union. We put all their birthday, Christmas, and other money there. The CU also will give them money for good grades if they bring in their report card
