Anyone have any experience or thoughts on buying a former rental car. Wife has been wanting a van and I have seen some decent priced ones that use to be rentals. All tend to have between 30-40k in mileage and are priced around our budget of 20k.

Piss on a car, if it works and gets you from point A to point B it's doing it's job. I'm a OT baller and my last yukon had 284,000 miles on it when I got rid of it.

It seems to be a love or hate kind of decision.

Personally, I would never. I don’t ride rentals extraordinarily hard (minus the mustang in Hawaii), but I know lots of people do. No thanks.

I have had one for 5 years, bought with 32K miles, no issues at all, would do so again without hesitation.

rental companies do preventative maintenance on their cars better than we do. You can request detailed maintenance records as well from them.

Agreed but correct me if I’m wrong, some engines may not be great for longevity if they are driven like a bat out of hell from Day 1?

On the pro, at least you know the oil is being changed. It wouldn’t surprise me if a “Nissan” dealer put out a certified POS with 25k miles that hasn’t had I t’s first oil change until it was traded in from a dopey Owner

I wouldn't buy an economy or midsize sedan that was a former rental, but I bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee in '06- it was an '06 and had 17K miles on it. It's got 160 on it now and we've had little to no problems out of it. My MIL drives it now and might put 5k miles/year on her car- perfect for her

Bought a one year old Toyota Avalon that was a retired rental. Damned solid car. Had it for several years.

A friend works for Enterprise delivierimg retired rentals to dealer lots all over La and Ark. There are tons of them out there, and you won’t always know.

I did a Carfax that tipped me on the one I bought. When I asked the dealer how he got the car, he honestly told me it was a former rental, which I already knew.

Same, I got mine for 9K, even if I get 5 years out of it, it’s well worth it.

I've had 2 former Enterprise cars in the last couple years. Never a problem with either.

Yes there is the variable of of the rental car driver who "abuses" the car. Me personally, the last thing I want is to have an incident in a rental car so I actually drive with extra care. Plus, any abusive driver only has the car for a short period of time, it's not like they have it for months or years at a time. Rental cars never miss oil changes or routine maintenance, and are cleaned after every use. I would have no problem buying a rental car.

One of the most well know used car dealers in my area, one that was close to tops in volume sold in Louisiana, consistently buys vehicles at auction that are Enterprise rentals. Says he gets good cars from them, typically better than ones he gets as trades.

I know this is like the "conventional wisdom," but what the hell exactly are you doing in a rental car?
