I can't believe that I actually know people who don't do this. Their attitude is that as long as they think they have a few hundred dollars in the bank as a cushion, they are fine. A few of these people don't even fill in their checks/charges, etc in a register of any kind.

Last night while paying some bills and updating the checkbook, I notice a $300 check against my account that had posted online. I clicked on the image, and sure enough it was not mine.
Do not trust your banks and credit card companies folks. I have had two instances of charges coming on my credit cards that were not authorized.

I check my bank account online regularly, and always click on the checks that post to make sure they are legit.

As far as physically balancing the checkbook by hand... not much point anymore with online banking.

We write about 10 or 12 a month, mostly for child care/school stuff and some bills that don't allow auto draft.
There is still alot of ATM withdrawels, auto drafts, transfers to other accounts, direct deposits, misc atm deposits, etc to keep up with.

I write one check a month and everyone else gets paid online. If my ex-wife wants her money, she's going to have to take that check to the bank.

I don't balance mine and you put the exact reason why I don't in your post.... It's all done for you online already.

I scroll the activity periodically and if there is anything I don't recognize I click on it. I would have picked up the same banking error you found using my method. Manually writing it in checkbook is archaic.

I think most learn the hard way during college years. I bounced more checks than I care to remember. For that matter, most checks written to Dominos at 3 in the am I don't remember writing at all. At 40 I stay on top of it to the penny. There have been a few occasions where certain banks have made mistake that would have cost me a few hundered dollars. Money is too hard to come by these days.

Most of the money software packages like quicken or MS money will grab your account activity automatically from the online banking site. From there it's a 5 min ordeal to balance the account when the statement comes in.

Not to mention having the breakdown that the software gives you at the end of the year makes taxes 100X easier.

I can't believe there are people who STILL do this. Like he said, you can get software to do it automatically or do everything online. I write maybe two checks a month and everything else is DD.

I know it's probably a lot harder when you have kids, though.

I don't balance my checkbook...I do have a budget that I do in excel and as long as I stay under that I don't care.

I never have less than 1500 in my checking account and check the transactions online religiously.

I guess I have alot more transactions that you folks to track, but just looking online at 40 transactions a month isn't going to help me to determine if someone is overcharging me for something or if the bank is making a mistake. Sure the $300 example was easy, but smaller things can slip through.
I am talking mostly about my friends who used debit cards for lots of stuff and never think to check on their account other than to make sure there is plenty of money in there.
I live in the dark ages I guess.

Sometimes the bank gives you extra money by mistake. Last week while checking my online statement I noticed a deposit that I did not make. I called the bank to tell them it was a mistake and not my money. They later called me back to get permission to debit that money from my account. They explained the mistake occured when a clerk accidentally forgot to close my account on her computer and deposited the next customer's deposit into my account.

can't believe people still use paper checks. Most places run them on the spot through the bank acct. Waste of time. I check my acct every couple of days, pay all my bills online and have all my accounts merged to one page so i can see them all and my investments.

I'd say 90% of my paper checks go to friends/family to pay them back for stuff, or split bills, etc... can't remember the last time I paid for anything at a business with a paper check.
