Friends,

I hope many of you were able to make money today in the stock market. It seems GME is the real entertainer and gainer. It has been quite a fascinating ride that I have avoided, even though several times I was very close to pulling the trigger. In the end, I do not like video games and what they represent, so I could not.

While reading some of the articles discussing GME, I came across several mentions of Dillard's, as it, like GME, is over shorted. But unlike GME, it is so far, little known to the WSB crowd and I like the company. When I need quality Christmas ornaments, there is no store that is more reliable and expansive than Dillard's. I do not buy clothes there, but the Christmas ornaments are second to none. Traditionally, that would not be considered a very good reason to purchase a stock, but these are, for the stock market, irrational times it seems.

Anyone else interested in Dillard's stock?

Yours,
TulaneLSU

P.S. Full disclosure: I purchased 35 shares at $99.50.

Personally, I wouldn't invest in most retailers long term right now that didn't already have a huge online presence.

If you want to just trade it I guess that's another situation entirely.

They're up big today but I can't imagine that business model being very exciting for investors. Unless they pivot, I don't see how they survive.

From what I recall, doesn't Dillards own the majority of their real estate? They've sold several fairly significant holdings over the past year or two.

Could be dead wrong, but I thought there was an article on it several months back (and yes, I'm too lazy to google it)

I believe they do but selling real estate doesn’t bode well for continuing operations. Ideally you’d like to see them close and sell low performing locations but then what do you do with that cash?

Investing back into a broken business model doesn’t make sense and a dividend doesn’t provide future returns. It’s great they have all that real estate but what can they do with it is the big question.

The trimsetter animal ornaments at dillards the day after Christmas truly are the greatest decorative value I have seen.

Friend,

I suppose you recall TulaneLSU's Top 10 Dillard's New Year Day sale purchases last year. If you don't let me remind you:

Trimsetters upped its game this year with even better cloisonne' ornaments than years past. I purchased the hummingbirds, leopards, reindeer, and a mouse king. They are architecturally astonishing and the colors, dare I say it, are just perfect. Original cost: $48 each. Sale cost: $12 each.

As for Dillard's stock, IMO, it has the most similarity to GME of all the other names bandied around (BB, AMC, NOK, etc.). Mall retail that is extremely over shorted. I could be wrong, but we shall see.

TulaneLSU

Friend,

The Dillard’s clearance outlet on Williams is one of my favorite stores. I enjoy the incredible deals I’m able to acquire on Daniel Cremieux clothing and I once saw David Vitter while shopping there. Perhaps we can get lunch one day at the newly rebuilt Harbor Seafood and I can show you the store.

Yours truly,

I have fond memories of Sears. We should contact WSB and see if they could save it. Great memories in the catalog and their dragon shirts

Friend, what a collection. We have a lizard, peacock, and cheetah. I plan on buying all that I can over the next few years.

Friend,

Buy early and buy often. The Trimsetter cloisonne collection is one of the least appreciated Christmas lines. Mother and I have an entire tree for only these ornaments. We have a good 80 more including multiple starfish, alligators, goldfish, peacock (my favorite), cardinal, sea turtles, and lizards. The only two I have seen at Dillards that I did not buy were the snake and the scorpion. We need to ensure that this line of decorations continue for many years.

I note that Dillard’s was up to $111 in after hours trading. Not bad for a stock that closed at 87$ just yesterday, an increase of 28%.

TulaneLSU,

While I myself am not interested in investing long term in a retailer, the chart is rather interesting that it’s seen such a reinvigoration. You may need to reduce your Christmas ornament spending next year, you’ve pushed the stock price far too high.

On a similar note however, I like the idea of playing retailers short term with covid recovery and the interest in retailers like GameStop and Bed Bath and Beyond right now. Dillard’s is past the point where I would likely buy in, but Macy’s and Tanger Outlets both have a similar play but are more modestly valued at this time. Tanger Outlets (SKT) will likely be a target for me tomorrow for short term call options.

Thank you for your input, and give my best to Mother!

Yours in Christ,

Friend,

Thank you! I will be sure to fuel SKT with about $5000 worth of premium tomorrow. Little known fact is I bought my only pair of jeans I have ever owned at the Levi’s store at Tanger Factory Outlets in Gonzalez. While I have never worn those jeans, I like knowing my investment helps keep retail stores open. Big Tech is moving to destroy all retail and it would be a shame to lose it and have nothing but Walmart and online shopping.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

P.S. I love Macy’s! Thanks for that tip too. Great Christmas decorations there too. Compare TulaneLSU’s Top 10 Macy’s Christmas decorations to TulaneLSU&s Top 10 Christmas decorations of BBB to understand why I will take a pass on BBB.

Every time I hear this song, I think of TulaneLSU.

I bought DDS when the covid hit and sold at the end of September because it wasn't doing much :/

Great point about Sears. I ended up catching a piece of that squeeze before they passed away.

I like M. Heavily shorted, huge ecommerce presence, think Q4 numbers beat expectations.

Friend,

Usually I wear slacks.

I received an insiders email from Dillard’s with a preview of the 2023 Trimsetter Christmas ornament line. Although Dillard’s is now trading at $311, I decided to invest another $5000 because the new ornaments are spectacular.
