I have a few friends who will be after 30+ years of investing.

I'm having my portfolio audited next week and it might be time to move into tangibles and more secure money markets.

At worst I switch positions to different markets

Basically I’m tech heavy right now. May start more positions in travel heavy stocks soon.

Should we have cashed out when it hit 20k? 25k?

I don't know honestly just this came up in a breakfast conversation with a small group recently like, Thursday?

I am not sure why the down votes are happening?

I have asked the question because these guys have 7 figure portfolios.

Is it unreasonable?

Why would a person do this? Maybe if a retired person presently needed the cash due a desperate situation.

What is the significance of 30K? Why that number?

It's not. There are a lot of people looking at EM equities and moving money away from bonds. Money market inflows were huge in Q2. But just remember that means a lot of cash on the sidelines so it could go right back into US equities depending on how 2021 looks.

So what? Mine has 7 figures too when you add the cents in.

In general trying to time major market moves is a fool's errand.

The only people who should "cash out" are older people and I believe you're supposed to gradually move your funds into lower risk vehicles as you get older.

I don't quite understand the animosity here?

I am only asking if an algorithm exists for cashing out at certain peaks?

Is this a taboo question?

Peaks Like arbitrary numbers like 30K?

If someone had a magicial sell high algo they wouldn’t be making it public

Probably because this topic is posted in some form twice per week, and the discussion is always the same. And that discussion is...

You can't time the market. Period.

The 30k number is just as arbitrary as any other number. If your friends have seven figure portfolios and are close to retirement then maybe that move makes sense. For those of us who are farther out it makes very little sense.

It's called Value Cost Averaging. Using it as part of an overall strategy has been profitable for me.

Assuredly I did. I don't agree with my friends declarations, but ponderable findings should be considered?

Questions should be asked? Is this not the forum for such?

30k has never been reached and must be a milestone event yay?

New money?

Already did last week. Parked it in a money market until the future of the country becomes clearer.

Don't really see the market going anywhere sustainable until then.
