Trying to help my brother through a family financial crisis.

Anyone have experience selling a univesal life policy to a viatical broker. What is the usual percenage of recovery from the policy stated value.

This would be a $100,000 policy.

Policy holder is 67 ,white male diaabetes seems to be managed with medication, no other major health issues, still working on a semi retired basis, non smoker.

Myself, looking at one and had called a few companies, you are right. Sale pitch after sale pitch. Got to the point I got sick of their BS.

You probably already know this but don’t forget to check the cash value and surrender value of the policy.

I see the ads for these on TV. While I have no need to do this I would be interested in knowing what you find out. Please update this thread when you find out.

I've seen a few. You tell them how much you want to pay every year and you get X coverage for the year. Up to a max level that you have qualified for, with the rates per $1000 locked in.

Been a while, though.

A local fellow got AIDS in the 90s when it was a short-term death sentence. Sold his insurance in one of those viatical deals. Came close to death man times, but is healthy as a horse for the last 20 years. Kind of like Magic Johnson.

I bet those folks who bought his policy took a beating as they kept/keep paying the premiums and waiting for him to die.

From what you described in the OP, the policyholder is too healthy to qualify for a settlement. The life expectancy needs to be VERY impaired. I would say on average 48 months or less.

Going to a place where you are likely to find people that have actually experienced what you need to do, and have no vested interest is a bad thing? In addition there are lots of insurance agents, CPAs, CFPs, etc. that post here.

Thanks for rebuking this poster. Its always amazing how but hurt some people get over a matter which does not affect them. I was seeking input from those who mayhave experienced a viatical sale to gauge whether they thorught they were treated fairly as well as to determine the percentage of recovery.

some policies have a accelerated benefit option rider if you have a reduced life expectancy.

It doesn’t sound like it’s a health crisis, at least for the insured, correct?

Do you know what the cash value/account value is?
