I didnt grow up a Tiger fan but I have been one ever since I moved here 43 yrs ago. Both of my kids are LSU alums.

I will say this. The 90’s tested that fandom but I survived. Bertman ball was born then

I don't think it's so much about attending as having SOME type of connection to the school.

Clearly, you have that connection.

I think people get annoyed when you have someone who decided in 2021 they're a huge Georgia fan now.

Or notre dame fans who have literally, zero connection to the school in every way, shape, and form - and also talk about their academic prestige while not having the grades themselves to even get into the school.

You are.
But it only works for LSU.
Anyone who didn’t go to Alabama who is a fan of Alabama is to be shamed.

If anyone has hesitation about true fandom that thinks a degree from said University is a prerequisite, go to any Alabama forum, bar, or game. It’s not a requirement nor membership qualification.

I have plenty of friends that are very good Tiger fans that didn't go or graduate from LSU. I'm fine with all true Tiger, not bandwagon, fans.
While I never use the or like the term even though I"m a LSU graduate, I draw the line when someone uses the "we" term when talking about LSU even though they aren't a graduate.

You don’t have to be alumni or attend LSU to be a fan. That is just ridiculous to think so. I know many hardcore fans that attended other schools because they got a scholarship there or for other reasons but are as big or bigger fans than me.

What I hear and see are comments about “new fans” ie those that didn’t suffer through the 70’s or worse 90’s and only became a fan once they started winning. That is kind of stupid for people to question someone’s “fandom”. The more fans any team has the better! Screw what others think.

I do challenge all of us fans to donate to the university. If everyone gives a little LSU will compete or exceed most universities consistently in academics and athletics.

I have a friend that went to school at LSU and totally thinks this way. It’s annoying.

I chose not to go to LSU and join the military.

I say all of this because…. I was never a student or athlete at LSU. But I’ve been a fan for life and have deep ties to LSU. Am I not worthy of being a fan?

I have a bachelors and masters from LSU and you’re probably a bigger fan than I am.

Anyone who says you can’t be a fan of a school you didn't go to is just engaging in some weird kind of nonsensical gatekeeping. Just ignore it and root for your Tigers!

This is why I laugh at people who get pissy about the UL name stuff... Most of these people did not even go to college, or they went to LaTech or Southeastern. The saying in Lafayette has been, "If you are wearing a UL shirt, you probably went there. If you are wearing an LSU shirt, you probably went to Walmart."

I'm an LSU fan because I grew up in the Baton Rouge area. I was the roof monkey that had to go up and adjust my grandfather's antenna so we could pick up the game from Lafayette when it was on Tigervision here. I grew up rolling down the Indian mounds and hanging out my Mike's cage. Colleges like LSU or Alabama are not just schools. They are a cultural anchor point for a region.

I think where people have issue are “bandwagon” Bama fans in Laffy or New Orleans who joined because they are affiliated with ULL or Tulane and hate LSU. Or, you have the other group of “Bama football, Duke College BB, New England Patriot, New York Yankees, Boston Celtic” fans who just gravitate to successful franchises.

The NYY and Braves fans in La is hysterical. But it happened because through the years there were players from La and the Yankees and Dodgers were always in the WS back in the day. There are Cincinnati Reds fans there too from the 70’s. Those that loved Rose, Bench, Morgan, etc. many didn’t even know that Morgan played for the Astros. Crazy how close the follow their team.
I bet outside of Judge most NYY fans in La don’t know more than 3 players including DJ LeMeheiu. Just how dedicated “fans” they are. Just a bunch os bandwagon fans.

If every school fan base was only people who went to school there 95 percent of viewership in college ftb would be gone thus it would be as big as high school athletics
