This is a great article. JR was clutch. LSU was never out of the game with him under center. And what happened at Oakland is as much Oakland as him. Forever one of my favorite tigers.

How were they better?
Mett was a better passer and Flynn just ran the team better. I remember being disappointed that Russell didn't play in the bowl game his Junior year because I thought he would have been able to declare pro if he did, clearing the way for Flynn in 2006.

I always called him JRock. I was in tuscaloosa in 05 when he grew the td in overtime to win. Both teams were undefeated and top ten late in the season. It was amazing.

Also was in Knoxville when he hit bow for a td in the final seconds to win in 06.

Awesome player.

He threw for 52 TD and was like 22-4 as a starter...

I put Russell below Flynn and Mett as well. Based on how he did when he played here. Obviously he was talented.

Are you insane? Flynn couldn't beat him out for 3 years and his senior season is statistically inferior to J-russ '06 in pretty much every way.

I'm happy and sad for him at the same time after reading this.

Happy he got chances to live a life so many dream of. Glad he got his family money. Glad he had a good career at LSU.

But also sad, that he could never get the neighborhood mentality out of his head. That mentality of being a ghetto star cost him so much in the long run. It sucks he was with a dogshit organization but he can also blame himself for doing ghetto shite when he had a chance to become legendary.

LSU lost to Tennessee after Rita, but yeah it was a top 5 matchup IIRC.

What is the rant’s opinion of Russell? A good tiger? I rarely hear him mentioned when discussing the legends.

Seems like another overrated Jimbo Fisher product at QB.

There’s probably a good argument to be made that he had the second best single season of all LSU QBs.

I saw an UGA DE bounce off of him one night and he completed the pass.

A lot of "it's cause I'm black" excuses in there even though he was paid millions and was pampered most of his athletic career. He acts like he was fricking Jackie Robinson, like there had never been a black qb before him.

He blew every dime he had. This was several years ago so he may have sold some real estate and made some money back, but he’s definitely not worth 4mil currently.

Jordy Culotta made it sound like yesterday that he had bought up a bunch of real estate when he was drafted and he is swimming in cash right now and far from broke haha.

Nice read

And reminder that in our society, being an elite athlete is worshipped, and their education is sometimes incidental at best. Regret his college education does not beam through in that article nor the sense that his education set him up for successppst football.

Anyone else get that sense?

I remember vividly when Saban announced Jamarcus in his recruiting class, almost as if he were “icing on cake” of badazz class. He, by himself, was noteworthy. I immediately thought, future championship on the way.

Sadly, I did not think of his education one time since, until now. Nice reminder to me that I am part of the multitude of problems with college football.

you aren't part of the problem at all. It's up to the player and his family to ensure he gets the education he wants.

Yes, the athletic administration will probably guide athletes toward silly, easy majors, but it's ultimately the player's decision. Now sure, football takes a lot of time, but getting a degree in a legitimate major is absolutely possible, with the right time management.

Hell, back in the late 80's, I worked with an electrical engineer who was a starting OLineman at LSU in the mid-80s. As a fellow EE, I can tell you that curriculum is brutal, but my buddy managed both EE and football. Others do the same with other rigorous majors.

Fans have nothing to do with it - it's on the player and his family.
