I think the fact that those things were, for the most part, financial disasters is the hold up.

LSU prefers to play at the Box and make that few extra hundred thousand dollars that one weekend.

The Superdome can no longer host baseball due to the new plaza level seats. They are no longer movable.

From my understanding the classic died due to inability to bring 3 state teams in on a consistent basis. Not many schools were knocking on the door to come get their asses kicked by LSU and Tulane.

Could we do a Zephyr Field?

I understand the Superdome angle and was really thinking more about the teams/event than the stadium.

I'm thinking with baseball continuing to increase in popularity, there are more states in play then back in the day.

This.

Move Wally Pontiff classic to an early weekend, add two or three more games and rename The Wally Pontiff Showdown sponsored by Winn-Dixie. Just an option.

Some new blood other than TX, MS and FL is out there.

Think USCe, Clemson and Coastal Carolina.

Skip stopped playing in it when the weenies' AD kept insisting that they get equal monies when LSU was the one team bringing in the huge crowds. It then came down to losing revenue from home games at The Box vs sharing monies with the weenies when they were not deserving of equality. The story goes that Skip took their AD to the cleaners when she started bitching bout equality. FWIW: she was subsequently fired for inappropriate behavior with a female weenie athlete.

It wasn't just Tulane. Alabama, Auburn, Texas, A&M, USM, DUKE, UNO, Rice and many more have played in the Winn-Dixie showdown. Show me where Skip Bertman single handily shut it completely down. Or LSU being pulled out the tournament have to do with the end. Do you have Football mixed up with Baseball? If I'm wrong I apologize

I cann't "show" you anything but it's a well known fact for those around the LSU baseball program back then. As I recall, there was even an article in the N.O. Times Picayune bout the reason for the Classic's end & this was the reason stated. Getting opponents was never a problem, just the opposite, as visiting teams were guaranteed 3 games in a rain proof stadium against 3 quality opponents. The Mississippi schools loved it, as did the schools from Texas, tho UT would never agree to play in it. Alabama schools wanted in as often as possible. etc. As for LSU pulling out being the reason it ended: Of course it was. Give me a break. What other La. school would have drawn the crowds & the attention of the out of state schools like LSU's name did.
