Yeah, it's too bad bc he was finally turning the corner toward season's end.

Maybe he's received bad advice and maybe he's being told unreported forward looking draft information, idk, but on its face this looks like a bad idea.

Trev graduated and wasn't enjoying football anymore. I wouldn't have him on the list.

While Saban was at LSU I remember an interview he did, he said that at the end of the season he sits down with the players and tells them where they will likely get drafted. If it is not in the first two rounds, he recommended that the player should stay put.

If you are a projected 5th or 6th rounder, why not come back and work on building skills to improve draft status?

The only think I can think why a later round prospect should leave is a running back with an OL that is depleted between seasons, or a WR with a subpar quarterback. There are great NFL receivers out there that never got the chance in college to truly show what they could do on the field due to a subpar QB.

I agree with yours. But I might move Smith to #2 ...but Faulk is no doubt #1

Could it be that he just couldn't make the grades?

Nothing else makes sense.

and he's drafted in the top 3 rounds.
Lol no chance.

Nothing against the guy- he's just not nearly as good as the internet star fellas said he was going to be.

If we're being honest- he was a liability this year and our 3rd best DT. When all playing and healthy he wasn't as good as Mekhi or Jordan

I hope he has an Al Woods career. I hope we look up in 2035 and Maason is still in the league.

But, if I was an NFL GM he graded out as a UDFA. Maybe he's the workout champion at the combine.

Aren't those just a matter of which schools want a player?

If Kelly, Kirby, Nick, Harbaugh, and Dabo are all courting a player he must be good. Those coaches can't all be wrong.

I can't imagine Rivals is spending time watching film from thousands of high school games.

Will he even be drafted. Truth is he did nothing at LSU.

I think Maason had it in his head already that he was going to declare this year no matter what.

So many defensive lineman. Just a few 5 star DT's off the top of my head that were well hyped when they came to LSU from Louisiana: Anthony Johnson, Jaquelin Roy, M. Smith. LSU has had some serious misses at the DT spot especially from the home state.

Anthony "Freak" Johnson was probably one of the worst ones as well.

Wish him well in the NFL.

Wish he would've stayed one more year to try and reach his full potential as a college football player but it's his life, as they say.

It seems that the Florida State game changed the trajectory of his life.

Malachi was ALWAYS going to declare early. I worked with a family member when he signed with LSU and that was always his plan. Some plans seem great initially, but there’s no harm in revising them. These players need to realize that when it comes to deciding when to declare.

So Trev leaving wasn’t necessarily a shocker. Running a 4.9 in the 40 was.

Exactly. There was nothing on the field left for Trev. He wasn't going to magically ever become more athletic.

Smith is going to be drafted based on how he tests. If he's this freak athlete we were told, he'll likely go in the top 3 rounds. If he's not that athlete, he was never going to go that high regardless.

Although I believe that staying is the best option if you’re not projecting first three rounds, it’s hard to figure who can and will be good pro players. It’s a very different game.

I hope this decision turns out well for Smith. It’s just hard to see it turning out well based upon his inability to stand out this season.

Definitely up there. Freak had just really come into his own his Jr. year and I think made like 2nd-3rd team All SEC. This despite being banged up most of the year (remember that brace on his arm).

Interestingly, I saw Freak had dropped weight and was playing as a DE in the XFL just before Covid.

The answer is Sam Montgomery. Left early and went undrafted.
