Does the Deven Sheerin injury loom larger than originally thought? The dude was throwing 99 with one of the best sliders in the portal if I remember correctly.

Man this hurts.. what could have been this season

Hard to say what he would’ve done at this level. The more impactful injury has been Guidry. Guidry, Evans, Cowan would be legit and you could guarantee one of them throws each day on a weekend

We lost 4 pitchers before and during the 2023 season.

All we need is for all of our pitchers to improve significantly. No big deal.

Sheerin was like a lot of other guys we got from the portal and didnt have great control last season

Completely untrue. As a TRUE FRESHMAN:

It appears we need pitchers with good command, not just speed, IMO.
Speed means nothing if you cant throw accurate strikes...

JJ has talked about this a few times this week... says its about the right combination of a guy being able to hit his spots and what the best velocity a pitcher can throw while still being accurate. Example, Tuesday Schmidt was in the zone at 92 but ran it up to 96 a few times and was very erratic. Rizy the other day mentioned the pitching lab has a screen that shows every pitcher and their strike%, first pitch strike%, 2 out of 3 strikes%, etc. They are actively working to correct this and are stressing the right ideals to get there.

Max effort pitching is shite. It is throwing at this level and not pitching. They aren’t good enough to do that and go 7 as starters.
Plus only dumbasses believe they are actually throwing 98. That is maybe 95 by the old guns used in the 80’s and 90’s because the ball is being picked up at the hand as opposed to in flight.

So are you saying that the technology for the guns was better 30-40 years ago than it is today? I'm genuinely asking because that sounds illogical.

Cowan and the Sunday relievers were great. It was the Saturday guys.

Always has to be one of the best pitchers on the staff that gets hurt before the season starts

quote:the radar is the radar. It is where the ball is being picked up versus then. Like I said, it is in the hand not further out from the pitcher. This the pitch is going to be faster because it loses speed due to gravity, friction, etc.

Skip said it the same thing the other night about McDonald throwing 95 in 89. He said that is more like 98-99 today. There is a pop and sound of the seams when you’re touching 100. People describe Ryan, Skenes and a few others like that. I’ve umped pitchers that threw 93-95. Greg Patterson was one that could touch 94 them when he was a freshman in college.

So Todd Walker just said 95 then = 100 today bc of reaction time…
