The AP poll usually is a close approximation of the Harris poll, so it's worth paying attention to until the Harris comes out.

this is true
I tend to trust a poll more when the people ranking teams actually have the opportunity to watch the games
the premise of a coaches' poll is really stupid
that being said, the BCS poll is superior late in the season thanks to the computer component.. even though the Harris is just as worthless as the Coaches' poll.

Go by? For what? It's not mostly useless.
To use as a common barometer for how good teams are when talking about SOS, etc.
My position is that (A) the AP poll is the best one out there, and (B) that in the BCS era, the winner of the BCS NCG is the only true champion, barring any incident where that champion is stripped of its title for cheating.
The system is the system. Once you play in that #1 vs. #2 championship game, you are the champ no matter if you came into it ranked #1 in the AP or #5 in the AP.

Why is the AP poll so meaningless? The AP poll has been declaring a national champ for 60 or 70 years, and everyone outside of Baton Rouge recognizes the AP champion as a legit national champion.
But for those 60-70 years, a college football national champ wasn't always (in fact hardly ever) decided on the field. Now, we have a system that allows for a one game playoff to determine a national champion. The AP poll voluntarily withdrew from that process, so their poll is meaningless.
If LSU was in 2003 USC's position at the end of this year (AP #1 but didn't play in the BCSNCG), I would hope that LSU wouldn't put another championship flag up in the north endzone. They probably would, but I wouldn't agree with it. LSU fans chastise Bama for all of their phony National Titles...we can't have our cake and eat it too.

Agree with op but consider if OU loses. The Bama/LSU game could be #1 v. #1. Which would make it perhaps the most compelling regular season game of the decade.

We didn't have a problem doing so in 2003.

This. Ignore all polls till the end of the MNC game.

Why is the AP poll so meaningless?
In 2003.....
(Team A) played half (7 of 14), of their games against AP ranked teams.
(Team B) played only 4 of their games against the AP ranked teams.
(Team A) beat 6 AP ranked teams and lost to 1 AP ranked team
(Team B) beat 4 AP ranked team and lost to an unranked team, a team the AP considered not worthy.
(Team A) beat the highest ranked AP team and only 1 of the 7 AP ranked teams played was ranked #30 or below at #30.
(Team B).. 2 of the 4 AP ranked teams played were #30 or below.
(Team A) also had better record (13-1) with larger margin of victory vs stronger SOS
(Team B) not as good of record (12-1) with smaller MOV vs weaker SOS.
AP chose Team B as their national champion instead of Team A? Why? What did the AP voters possibly use as a gauge to crown their champion when their very own poll was ignored by the AP VOTERS THEMSELVES?
As you can see, the AP voters IGNORED THEIR VERY OWN POLL or STANDARD and made a statement themselves that their poll is meaningless. That my friend speaks volumes about the AP voters and their "meaningless" poll.

This is stupid. Did LSU have the better resume? Yes. But that doesn't mean that people can't think USC was better team. It is a subjective assessment, not an objective one. The AP was correct to keep USC #1. The BCS caused this problem by refusing to implement rules after Nebraska in 01 that would have eliminated OK from the CG.

Ya'll need to just let this go. We won a Championship in 2003 and that's never going to change. Unfortunately, USC won a championship that same year that is also universally (except in BR) recognized, and that's also never going to change.
Just let it go.
My whole problem with the AP in 2003 is that it was a part of the BCS calculation; therefor, it is not as prestigious and equal to the BCS trophy that year. If that was the case we should have had a computer trophy issued.
The AP then pulled their poll out of the BCS after it didn't agree with them which proves they don't care about a real champion. They just want the power to create news with their own poll. The BCS is much more unbiased than the AP poll.

The AP (the organization) was never part of the BCS. The AP never granted explicit permission to use the poll; they did grant implicit permission by not objecting to it's use however. They didn't vote for the BCS champion #1, because they never agreed to any such thing.
Should they have ever allowed the poll to be used? Probably not, but they didn't realize the snake pit they were jumping into. This is unfortunate because I agree with those that it is the best human poll out there. The voters are knowledgeable and they interact a great deal with the public. The poll would probably still be used if the BCS would had been willing to implement policies to prevent stupid results.

What is the Ap poll everyone here is talking about. I have never heard of it. Is this short for the A & P poll? Why would a grocery store do football polls?
Oh well, don't see the point in following any poll that doesn't factor into the BCS.
Should AP have been APP, you know short for 'app' as in application?

Well, the policy should have been that if your poll is going to be included in our BCS Standings, then the winner of our championship game has to be #1 in your final poll (the policy that exists with the Coaches and Harris polls). The AP likely wouldn't have agreed to that, so I don't see them being in the formula regardless.
