All you people saying Wilson hit UT QB in the neck are blind. My goodness. Pretty clear it's the chest and a legal hit.

Is it in the "neck area" or not?

His broken collar bone begs to differ

ETA: turns out there was no break as previously reported by CBS.

Devin got screwed no doubt.
The primary issue with this whole mess is consistency of calls across games.

No one is saying that hit is illegal according to the letter of the rule. EVERYONE is saying that if, according to the rule, DW's hit was illegal, then the Wilson hit was also illegal.

Neither was an illegal hit. It's just being used as an example to cast light on the fact that SEC officials do not consistently enforce the rules.

BUT

was it closer to targeting than White hit?

Which one was called Targeting and which one wasn't?

It’s pretty clear that the crown of his helmet hits the QB square in the jaw/neck area. But that shouldn’t be called either. He tried to avoid the head area.

His head is not up. If you pause the frame at the moment of impact his face mask is pointing to the ground. Very poor analysis. He also leads with the helmet to the neck area. It does not have to contact the helmet.

Unlike White, who led with the arms to the chest. In terms of avoiding targeting, White's hit is what is taught.

See this link, from someone who was in the room when the targeting rule was created, discussing White's hit and the hit by Auburn where targeting was reversed.

Terry McAulay, NFL Ref, on White Targeting Call

ETA: Why are you linking a twitter feed from a Bama student on this?

No sane person can claim that the crown of his helmet didn't make contact with the QB's head or neck.

Apparently the collar bone isn't the "neck area"... But the chest is as long as a forearm hits it first.

I think the hit is 100% legal but I also believe that if whute’s hit is considered ‘targeting’ then this hit should definitely be targeting.

My point is simply that the Wilson hit was not targeting. The White hit was not vicious nor intentional but appears to be targeting from a distance. 50/50 call for sure.

Pre-targeting...but illegal even then.

Guess what...no flag. Imagine that.

Oh...notice who the white hat is...

Your collar bone is not in your neck. Was a clean hit. Vicious, but clean.

Do me a favor and roll a finger off the top of your collar bone and let me know what you’re touching.

Was it a hit to the neck area of a defenseless player? If so, it is targeting.

Go to 19 seconds on the video at the link you posted. Explain to me how that is not contact to the neck area.
