Hopefully someone will eventually ask Blake if he thinks he can figure out how to defend an athletic QB in Year 3

Hopefully have the players take the right angles when blitzing

wait, but the OM people said that Lane only calls a few "shock plays" every game and really doesn't have that much to do with the offense on a play to play basis.

In fairness, there’s really no defense for a QB that can pass, but athletic enough to run when everything is covered.

When it comes to a really good running QB, Blake could have the exact right defense called to contain or stop him but it all comes down to whether he has the players that are fast and athletic enough to stop him. Blake can’t really help that guys like Reed makes our LBs look like D2 players trying to stop him.

Purportedly, in 2021 Lane told O what was wrong with his defense after Ole Miss beat LSU 31-14. Of note, LSU had given up 42, 42, and 31 in that 3 game stretch.
Two weeks later (after a bye) LSU had a completely different defensive approach vs. an Alabama team that was averaging ~40ppg vs. SEC opponents. LSU held Alabama to 20, and frankly would have won the game if Johnson could have made one big throw in the 4th quarter

I mean I think the point is we haven’t had the exact right defense called in these situations and we do have the athletes to stop these guys
Way too many times last year we went for a suicide blitz on 3rd down with zero contain against a mobile QB and got absolutely torched for it. Happened over and over again and we never really adjusted.
Glad we kept him but he absolutely needs to adjust in this area and we can’t go “well he can’t make the tackles” as an excuse because it’s heavily scheme related

I agree. And was furious when we did this against Vandy and Marcel Reed.
I like the structure we used to get the final sack against Clemson. I think we rushed 3, maybe 4, with the ends getting upfield to make the QB rise up in the pocket, and we have TWO spies waiting to gobble him up so he can just speed to an open side of the field.
You could keep numbers in the backfield by rushing 3 and having 2 spies to help contain the QB. That also helps with backs slipping out into the flat if they stay in for protection.

That, as well as players that need to contain, actually containing instead of crashing in and creating openings.
I will say, from what I saw this year, the edge players did a much better job at containing both runners and qbs. Idk if the edge coach gets credit for that or Blake Baker, but either way it was refreshing to see discipline at the edge position

It may be wishful thinking, but I'd hope that those two could sit down and play a football game like one would a game of chess or a role-playing game.

We had run stopping DEs. Our fast DE got hurt.

Those practices in August next year are going to be competitive/intense on both sides of the ball. Lane is going to be trying to beat Baker and Baker is going to try and beat Lane.
