Kim Mulkey

quote:

The day after she was hired, a friend of hers from North LA sent in a $100K donation for the basketball facilities. She understands what we need facility-wise and mentions a recent meeting discussing potential improvements to revitalizing the current PMAC spaces

Facilities

quote:

Said the PMAC gets a lot of the issue on the outside but said the day-to-day facilities like the practice facilities, weight rooms and office spaces are of more concern

quote:

Mentioned there are opportunities to add amenities if the concourse was widened. There are revenue opportunities LSU is missing with lounges and premium seating spaces.

quote:

Said the PMAC shows its age but for a gameday it shows well. They would love to have better concession stands and more amenities for fans, but the “guts” shows well. Not as important as day to day functionality and ability to work better.

quote:

Practice gym almost has too much space. Wished they used the dead space for a locker room and weight room, but actual gym is good. Mentioned no offices, weight room and the locker room being cramp to put it nicely.

quote:

There is enough space but it is all about reconfiguring the space they occupy. Take the space and make it work. Make everything more synchronized where programs can have a consistent day to day operation.

Wade discusses each player who has signed at the beginning.

I thought the practice facilities were pretty new. Did we go on the cheap there like we did with the New Box?

Good lord! That man is extremely detail-oriented. He is just a wealth of knowledge. I'm pretty sure he knows each player's entire life story.

Well he was at VCU when they opened a new $25 million bball development center for both programs. State of the art - practice courts, study rooms, locker rooms, whirlpools, kitchen, dining room, offices, trophy case. Video games, Video rooms. Fitness center, weight rooms. Its beautiful. Located directly behind the arena. The players do everything but sleep and go to classes there.

I don't doubt your report on VCU's facilities, but that arena is A DUMP. I went to the LSU-VCU game in 2019, and it makes the PMAC look like the Taj Mahal. The amazing thing is that a fan there told me it was built in 2001.

I think they were just poorly planned. They are very nice and were very expensive and well built, just not designed well.

But, TBH, college athletics is an ever-changing animal. Coaches want different things at different times. You provide something, and 5 years later it's obsolete.

This practice facility was what Trent Johnson wanted.

The practice facility was opened as a new build around 2009/2010. It was opened near the beginning of Trent Johnson's tenure. I'm not sure of the history of the development and planning. Who was in charge as far as athletic director, coach(es), architects, etc.?

It seems that it is lacking in many things that Wade wants in a practice facility. Consolidated operations, offices, training, rehab, etc. Also, the player locker rooms are small and don't compare favorably with competition. The actual practice courts are fine. They were built to closely mimic the PMAC court at the time as I recall on a tour in 2009.

I've been donating to the TAF basketball building fund over the past several years with the practice facility improvements in mind. I also made an additional donation to the fund after Mulkey was hired.

I believe that an improved practice facility would be a much better facilitator of training and recruitment than a PMAC renovation. This is what Wade has wanted since his hiring. I'm pretty sure that Alleva promised this to him. I have not heard Mulkey describe in any detail on what facility improvements she thinks are needed.

Contact your TAF rep if any of you have an inclination to donate for basketball building improvements!
