The odds of Skenes not getting Tommy John at some point is low. Everyone gets it nowadays. It’s not a big deal. We’ve got outfielders getting it now.

His arm is worth way more than a 9 inning shutout!

since 77. So don’t tell me a thing about em. You couldn’t name 20 players for Pitt if I gave you google

Wrong!!

Brian Giles
Jason Kendall
Barry
Clemente
Stargell
Jason Bay
Josh Bell
Skenes
Adam Laroche
O’Neill Cruz
McCutchen (twice)
BR
Mitch Keller
Gerrit Cole (ppl forget)
Charlie Morton (ppl also forget)
Jared Jones
Marte
Adam Laroche

Edit: Right. 17 or however many that is was the best I could do. Was a fun test though.

Also, if you are really Pirates fan and have been since 77, then I apologize for my assumption and for the years of turmoil. Mainly because after I finished listing I hit the google machine, and there are not many more memorable significant players that had extended careers for them in recent (30 years) history. Also, and mostly, because they have moved on from too many superstars before they became superstars.

Edit: Shite, forgot the most important one, fellow Cenla boy, Warren Morris.

I mean you really missed Bonilla, Van Slyke, Drabel, Welch, Cole, Archer, both LaRoches played for the Pirates, Charlie Hayes and his son Ke'Ryan, Bryan Reynolds, Neil Walker, etc... I mean it was only a few years ago the Pirates had what was one of the best outfields in baseball with Marte, Andrew, Polanco

If it was a playoff game, he would've kept pitching. They got Skenes on sale 4-5yrs 20mil. NYY/Dodgers would pay 30m just to have him for the rest of this season.

No hitter and he would've gotten a huge argument point for CY.

Ryan is the oldest to ever throw a no-hitter x2 and played longer than anyone since 1900. In many respects you are correct. He wasn't the only by any stretch to pitch 20+ CGs/season.

Because he’s the manager and you’re not. Baseball is a team sport and he has a bullpen.

Have you watched baseball since?

Yes - the hitters are FAR FAR worse and the pitching is watered down.
Clowns think pitching and hitting is better never saw Pete Rose, Tony Gwynn, Rod Carew, Dave Winfield, and many others play.
It’s a shite game in comparison.

The hitting is “worse” because the pitching is WAY better

If you were the Orioles last night, you saw:

Gerrit Cole for 6 innings
-98 FB
-91 cutter
-84 CB 3000rpm
-89 slider

7ip Tommy Kahnle
-94 FB
-87CH (.159BA, 44% whiff)

8ip Luke Weaver
-97FB
-92 cutter
-88 CH

9IP Clay Holmes
-97 sinker
-86 slider
- 82 sweeper

But yea, Pete Rose saw pitching like this all the time

They don't want to injure their ace. His long term health and franchise wins are much more important than a potential personal achievement.

How old are you? Really? Do you honestly believe pitching is way better? Did you watch Guidry pitch in 78? Why don’t you actually become a student of the game and just do a little research instead of thinking everything started in the 2020’s. Randy Johnson for example threw every bit as hard as Skenes maybe harder. He was consistently at 98-99 on guns that were 3 mph slower. So Johnson who pitched in the 90’s against Bonds, Griffey Jr and many others wasn’t as good? How about Greg Maddux or Glavine or Smoltz or Clemens or.. that’s the 90’s. Palmer, Ryan, on and on and on all were better than anyone pitching today. Why they are HOFs. Maybe Ohtani is about as close to those caliber pitchers.

The spin rate shite is about tact and now their asses are paying for it as soon as MLB started checking for it.

Quick, easy answer: That choice is only looking short term. Team goals are typically long term still at this point in the year.

Do you think it is harder to hit Ron Guidry the 4th time you see him in a game, or do you think its harder to hit 4 different guys with different out pitches that throw 98mph in a game?

Pretty easy question.

I mean, I have the stats right here. The batting average against Ron Guidry for his career:
quote:

1st time through order, batters hit .234 & slugged .379

4th Time through the order, batters hit .271 & slugged .445
