Why is the SEC Championship Game kickoff at such an odd time of the day?

4PM Eastern? Why not wait until the evening for a primetime kickoff or maybe at 12 noon like an NFL game? Has it always been at this time?

I've seen TBA or 3:30 for the game time on some sites, but I hope 4:00 is true since I have tickets to a concert that night.

SEC site says 3:30 EST, same window as SEC on CBS.

Best guess with nothing to back it up, maybe it’s the normal CBS time slot that they are contracted to. Who knows. Seems to always be in the afternoon as I recall

Yeah it was at night in 01 and 03. Moved up in 05 maybe. 07 for sure was afternoon. I’ve been to them all.

I thought CBS and ABC alternated the time slots for the SEC and ACC championship games.
Looking at the schedule for that week it’s a good time to play because it’s the only power 5 game going at that time.
Pac-12 is Friday night
Big 12 is at noon
SEC at 4:00
ACC is at 7:30
Big Ten is at 8:00
