re: Why is Shep often called a bust, but not Randle?

Shep is not a bust, but using his stats is a bit much. He got more than half (115 out 226 yards) in the first two games.
The problem was that teams realized after those two games that JJ was useless as a passing QB and Crowton was calling predictable plays.
So while you want to try and say his yardage isn't comparable, you have to realize Shep was being thrown screens most of the time, while Randle got deeper passes on a regular basis.
We'll see what Shep and Randle do these next two years, but they are neither in any way a bust.

It's really amazing. Shep, a starter, is to many a bust whereas his recruiting classmates like Loston and Ford are given a pass. I can only guess it is because he is someone the coaches put in front of the mic and because he got a lot of hype preseason.
A bust is Al Woods. Tough to say anyone on the roster is a bust right now. Arguably JLee is as a top 10 QB prospect who failed as a starter and couldn't wrestle the job back from Jefferson despite the latters struggles. But that would be a marginal argument when compared to Woods. Davenport is headed towards bustville but it is too soon. Ironically, isn't he the same vintage as Shep?

Davenport has definitely gotten the bust label.
Ford i think get lee way because whe have had so much depth at RB, and he shows so much talent we still think he can get it together.
And Loston is as much a starter as Shep is.

well poor qb play obviously contributed to Randle's lack of production and I guess you could say the same for Shep even though he's not really a "true" wide receiver, but either way, I don't see why people expect so much from players during their first 2 years. I mean sure they're 5 star recruits but still...they need time to develop.

Shep accounted for 25% of LSUs passing TDs during this last regular season.

Randle doesn't get the bust label (which gets thrown around way too much in general) because of the plays he's made. 2 TD catches in the back of the endzone vs Ole Miss in 2009, TD catches vs Bama and Auburn where he owned the DB. He's made some big plays despite utter and complete incompetance at the QB position.

Do you think his stats are any way effected by the QB he has been dependent upon to get passes to him ?

My observation has been that Shep hasn't had that great of hands so far.
Randle it has seemed has caught everything he should have caught and some he shouldn't have caught.
Both are solid players, but Shep seems a slight bust because he supposedly didn't have the game smarts for QB and has struggled at WR.

Randle has had his fair share of horrible drops the past two seasons. To act like he's caught everything in front of him is a revisionist view of reality.
That all said, he's still a great talent like Shep, and both will hopefully get an opportunity to have great seasons this year and next.

Amp Hill had a horrific injury and never recovered so he is not a valid comparison.
RS and RR's production suck compared to expectation but it would be easy to argue that it's a result of crappy coaching, scheme and poor QB play.
They may light it up soon if Kragthorpe is better than GC and JJ has really improved.
I think foljs thought RR would light it up like Julio Jones and AJ Green did early in their careers. Everyone expexted RS to be Percy Harvin and lethal "in space". Neither has happened.
That's noy being. "rantard". (pretty offensive term), that's just being honest.
LSU looks like the place 5 star skill players go to wither on the vine.

Shep hasn't been a bust in any way, but he was somewhat overrated by the recruiting services. He probably should have been a 4 star recruit instead of a high 5 star. Randle looks like he deserved the high 5 star rating.

He's made some unreal catches though. And his drops are few and far between. He and Toliver both caught more than the revisionists might have you think.

No he hasn't. Randle has the best hands on the team. Shep has dropped a shite ton more balls. To be fair, Shep is new to playing the position. Randle is a victim of playing with a horrible QB. I hope he stays next year just to see him play with a legit passer.

Yes he has. Several at critical times, but no more than any other great receiver has. People have over exaggerated the number of drops Shep has had, but he's obviously had more which is to be expected given his transition to a new position.

Not going to argue with you there. He's an amazing talent, but he isn't perfect and has had his share of mistakes.
The team as a whole and particularly in the passing game will hopefully be improved this year.

I have seen with my own two eyes Randle drop some critical passes so don't sit here and say he hasn't. One that sticks out is last year against Auburn we were driving and Randle let's a good ball go through his hands on about Auburn's 25 yard line and ended up being an interception. If we scored here it could have changed the game. I'd say that was a pretty critical drop

i'm not bashing jj, but you can't say either is a bust at this point because we've had little to no production from the qb.

First of all, im not saying either is a bust. Not after just 2 years.
But plenty of Rantards say "Shep is a bust, blah blah blah".
yet Randle is the next 'superstar' at LSU.
Only a fool looks for logic in the hollows of a Rantard mind.
