Having “touch” in high school at 15 years old does not equal starter at LSU in the SEC.

The trend used to be for players to be held back in 8th grade so they could have an extra year of maturity/development. Now the trend is to get to the SEC a year early (two years if you count the old hold back method) and try to compete. I think it's a terrible decision. A 16-17 year old QB isn't going to cut it in the SEC against 21 year old men.

I feel like message board dorks have been sucking off Hurley for no reason since the season ended. I've seen multiple threads hyping him up.

That's true. It's also true that some start playing too soon and suck because they weren't ready. Doing the NFL a favor by not having to waste time on them scouting said player.

Colin Hurley is still just 17 years old. MVB is 20 if I’m not mistaken. Hurley red shirted this year. MVB did not. Neither one is likely to see a huge amount of playing time next year unless Nuss gets hurt. I think with the difference in age and eligibility both guys could contribute in the future. I hope they both stick around.

Exactly. Hurley will be like an 18 year old incoming freshman or rs freshman and he and VB will have a real solid battle for the starting job. Hurley is learning and maturing while watching a starting qb with very similar skill set...a big arm. I think we will be ok at that position with VB arrival.

Truth be it I’m glad ppl aren’t talking about Collins or Hurley, let them battle it out and let the best man win. Too often we overhype players before they ever take a snap, we get these expectations around kids that were made by only ourselves

Reclassifying cost a year of playing. Not sure that was the best option for the young man to take.

He’s learning stuff in a college environment. This isn’t his year to shine. It’s a year to learn.

I don’t see a mistake.

If he can’t beat out Nuss he isn’t worth LSU’s time

Also if LSU is stuck with Nuss as QB1 we are in deep shite

There has to be an open competition for every position every spring.

Why did the article about Van Buren committing say the only other QB on the roster besides Nuss was AJ Swann?

Does not matter who the QB is, if the Oline is shite, then the QB will be shite! How long have we heard going into the season, this the best Oline ever. Has it materialized?! NO

There’s also the chance you get passed over because you just had to start as a freshman, then didn’t preform well.

f more QBs took the Nuss approach, they’d get to shine eventually. Players these days MUST (in their minds) play as soon as possible - or they leave Absolutely no patience era

I think it's more complicated than that.

To develop, players have to get on the field. If they get stuck behind someone else, then they spend their entire career on the sidelines. And the difference between 'winning the competition' may be the slimmest of margins and affected by skill-set, supporting cast, and maybe what the coaches want to do on offense.

Case in point: Burrow @ tOSU. Haskins was a class behind Joe. He 'lost' the job to Haskins in the spring of '18 because Haskins had a stronger arm and that swayed Urban. So what would you have advised Joe do? Wait your turn and be patient? Had he stayed at tOSU, it was possible he would've watched Haskins form the sidelines for his remaining two seasons. He could've stayed and started only one year in '19.

I expect Van Buren and Hurley to compete in the spring. If Hurley is behind after spring '25, I expect him to move on. Else, he runs the risk of getting only one year to start. And that almost ensures he won't get to max out his potential in CFB.

Coaches have to win. In this era, they have no choice but to play the portal. It's all just a mess.

You think he is worse now, after being coached in college, then he would have been with another year of high school coaching?

I don’t think it was a mistake. In two more years he will have had three years at LSU, and if he has the ability, he will be ready for a two year career as a starter and ready for the NFL at 22. Great decision, imo. If he doesn’t make it it’s because he didn’t have it.

He’s barely 18 right now. He redshirted last year. He will sit behind Nuss this year and have a shot in Spring 2026 along with whoever else we bring in. Van Buren is just replacing Swann.
