OM wouldn’t allow it. He wanted to coach through the playoffs

I think there is more to this story; but we probably will never know.

He's not. He wanted to coach the team. Ole Miss isn't allowing him to do so.

At Ole Miss, this season was basically their peak. That's not a bad thing. I wouldn't be surprised if they even win a playoff game. But nobody outside of Oxford believes Ole Miss is a serious threat to win the championship. He very easily could be content to have 8-10 win seasons regularly with the occasional playoff birth. He could have went down as an OM coaching legend.
Or, he could go to a program where he realistically can finish in the top 5 every season, with the opportunity to potentially win multiple championships.
I don't think there's anything wrong with option 1. But that's not how Lane, nor a lot of these big time coaches are wired. He wants to win a national championship every season, and will do what it takes to accomplish that goal. As for his current team, it does suck he had to accept the position before the season was over. Tbh, is be willing to bet, he would have preferred to be able to finish the season completely before needing to make this decision. But that's not something that is under his control. Rather, that's just how the cookie crumbles.

To become Saban 2.0. You can have a good year at Ole Miss, but impossible to build a dynasty there.

Tired of all the gayness that's in Oxford?

Saban didn’t abandoned but he left for what he thought was a better career move. Then he leaves because he’s a control freak, and could not do this in the NFL. He resurfaces at our most hated opponent and turns them into a dynasty. I would’ve hated Lane if he stayed at OM but he didn’t- I love him already. That said I had to force myself to like CBK not so much with the Lane Train!

This.
His statement makes this clear.

Saban and Carroll told him to take this once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s what Monte would recommend too. Lane even said he felt like he left Tennessee too early and seems like he always regretted it.
