You kind of bring that upon yourself when you say one guy isn't the best because it leads to the inevitable question of who is then?

Is it O'Sullivan at Florida? 19 years there. Only 3 losing seasons in SEC play. Never missed the NCAA Tournament. 9 CWS appearances...one national championship

Is it Van Horn at Arkansas? 24 years there. Only missed the NCAA Tournament once. 7 CWS appearances. ZERO titles.

Jim Schlossnagle at Texas? Has only missed the NCAAT 3x in his 25 year career. 7 CWS appearances. Zero titles.

Tim Corbin? 24 years at Vandy. 5 CWS appearances. Two NCs. Unlikely to make the NCAA Tournament this season as Vandy somehow has a worse RPI than LSU.

It's been an awful season for LSU. But if winning championships is the top metric in determining the greatness of a HC, then there are only two active coaches with more than one NC....Johnson and Corbin...neither will be coaching in the NCAA Tournament this season (barring an unexpected win of the SEC Tournament).

I guess the question becomes is the "best coach" a guy who almost never has a bad season, but also never wins a championship? Or is the best coach a guy who may be prone to a really bad season here or there, but when he has a good team he wins the championship?

Jay Johnson is not even 50 years old yet. If, in the next decade he wins even just 2 more NCs he will be mentioned as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport. And that's even if he has another awful season like this year in the next decade

If you look at the historical trend the last 10 years, especially since the NIL and portal, you will see that teams that win the championship almost always have a down year the next season. This is not the early 2000's anymore. There is a cost to winning the championship but a good coach at a great program can turn it around the next year. people need to chill and let JJ do what he needs to do to get us back in contention. He may have whiffed on most of the portal players but looks like he did a great job with the freshmen. He'll get it done.

He fricked up a lot of things namely funding with his asinine LONG coaching contracts and poor hires other than JJ.

This year sucked. We all know it. The complaints are warranted and we all know this is below LSU standards and expectations. This season is over. We will not win the SEC and we will not be going to a regional. It is ok to be pissed and bummed out. If we weren’t fans we wouldn’t be.

Everybody needs to get their heads out their butts and look around and the company we are in. Bottom half of the SEC includes

Ole Miss
Tenn
Vandy
LSU
South Carolina

5 of the bottom 8 are recent CWS winners. All this CJJ has lost it crap is just copium. Truely to get back to the winners circle it is going to take a different approach but LSU is not the only team that is feeling this pain.

Is this because rosters are cleaned out by the draft? NIL bids higher elsewhere? What is the new GM solution to the roster?

Thoughtful response. My original comment was not meant to stimulate a dialogue about who the best coach is in college baseball (I don’t care) but instead a simple observation of flawed logic by the OP; Ie the “best” don’t generate massive failures of the scale seen w/ this ‘26 team. Granted some of their lack of success can be attributed to injuries (outside of CJJs control) but I suspect it more so to reasons of CJJs doing, which he has openly acknowledged. That was quite unexpected and increased my level of overall scrutiny. You just don’t see this result from the “best”. Overly critical? Maybe; but I’m comfortable being that guy. I hope he proves me a fool…

I never said that, but a lot of people have tried to say it opened while LSU was in the middle of the CWS run and as a result didn’t have a chance to recruit targets before they committed elsewhere, That is simply not true.

Well, it opened after we won our regional. Here is the calendar for a team that plays in the national title, compared to other teams, and why they're at an objective disadvantage.
quote:

The calendar needs to be fixed.

The portal opened on June 2.

LSU was playing games until June 23, with 10 of those days (June 10-June 23) being in Omaha.

The Draft Combine is June 13-17.

Then the draft is July 13-15. It's not like football where you can host guys for weeks and weeks while still playing in the post season. Guys you want are likely playing the first weekend. That leaves you with about 5 days to really talk to guys between game/travel schedule prior to Omaha.

Then imagine if you're looking at a guy playing on the second weekend (16 teams). You get what, a day with them before Omaha? If everything lines up perfectly?

Teams that sit at home should not get a 10 day head start to recruit players because they faltered. It was ridiculous that Tony was doing in-home's with Landon Mack last year while Jay was stuffing DVH in a locker 1000 miles away.
You lose 3 weeks of very important portal scouting/recruiting.

Also, in reference to your comment about money, we had less of that for this roster than the previous roster. It showed.

It would be stupid of you to had lost any faith in Jay at any point and time. I’m not worried one bit about that man not being able to get LSU back to being CWS caliber.
